Compared to what? When has officiating been better? When there weren’t 100 HD cameras on the field and super slow-mo for every questionable play?

The constant complaining about the refs nauseatingly stupid. There are more questionable calls simply because there are many more cameras on the field giving you views you never had before, and, it seems, that’s what half of you watch the games for.

Have you just started watching the NFL this year? The Chiefs are going for their 5th title in 7 years and this is their 6th appearance in 7 years. They are the definition of a dynasty.

Teams line up with both tackles off the line of scrimmage and false start every single play. I’m not talking about holding calls or no calls. It’s 2025, referees should be held to a higher standard than they were in 1984.

Has anyone asked Scott Green why each officiating crew doesn't have a one of their members serve as a media spokesperson to answer questions in post-game press conferences?

I wonder what Scott Green thinks about the prospect of placing "hot mics" on members of the officiating crew so that their comments and conversations can be reviewed.

Is it really or do you get 20+ all angle 4K HD replays of each play, where missed calls would never have been seen previously?

If I was as dog shite at my job as many referees, I would have even more issues looking myself in the mirror. The actual athletes that put their blood, sweat, and tears on the line have to answer those cultures called sports reporters, but the striped Elmer Fudds that blow crucial calls just have to read mean tweets on the internet. Referees should be required to attend press conferences, their discussions while making calls should be broadcast, and report cards should be produced.

Being in court stated entertainment, the NFL gives each game’s officiating crew “points of emphasis” from the competition committee. The instructional points can vary from game to game and can be team specific.

As entertainment, the refs are just doing as they are told as part of their contracted employment.

There is nothing nefarious or even grossly incompetent. The refs are quite good at keeping the games very entertaining.

If they cared the refs would be full time NFL employees. And NFL would have a vetting process to find out any past team bias or rooting interest. And have full time ref quality department that would review prior weeks games. And have punishment system for enough wrong calls with required remedial classes to get back to games.

They've already tried the full time thing and scrapped it. That being said, if you're in the NFL, you're already doing it full time - you just happen to generally have another full time job as well.

You think NFL officials aren't investigated before being hired? Surely this will shock you, but it is 100% fact, past "rooting interest" has nothing to do with it. They are professionals and additionally, officiating beats the fan out of you. I suppose you would have to experience that to understand it.

You think the NFL doesn't have supervisors who review every play of every game every week?

You think NFL officials don't get "punished"?

Newsflash, they do, but there is no remediation - you just don't get playoff assignments and if you miss the playoffs enough you get fired.

OK, so now where do we go from here?

Actually hold the referees accountable. Players and coaches arent allowed to complain about officiating. The league ALWAYS has the backs of officials. There’s no public discipline or grading.

Everything is still a behind closed door culture with the officials for whatever reason while everyone else in the sports world is allowed to be criticized. Make these guys have media availability and have to answer for the shite they do

I should have said public grading. The general public is told all officials do a good job and they’re all working hard.

We have eyes and it’s disrespectful to the fans

Yeah this is fair and I agree. But they are graded on a weekly basis.

It's not that hard to see if any patterns emerge. Someone can run the stats and analyze how teams are penalized - frequencies, types of calls, results after calls, etc, etc. The stats will show it clearly if there is anything non random. Certainly some teams get penalized more than others due to their play, but it should be obvious is there is a finger on the scale.
