to be honest, it was arguably the dumbest benching in a while
the fact that the replacement was arse, everyone knew it. made it dumb. better to let him finish the season and draft his heir.

So a 3 year apology tour that's setting the franchise back a decade seems like a great way to fix that.

Agreed, and that wouldn’t surprise me.
Denver hasn’t had a threat at TE since Julius Thomas. And even though he was very athletic, it’s obvious he benefitted from Peyton Manning and the surrounding cast.
