Wow....how did the giants not get that?

Not covering him with a nickle corner is just silly though. Defending him with a LB or Safety is just dumb.
Also, as we saw last week and on this TD play when you try to bracket him the underneath man needs to play actual coverage and not just stand somewhere somewhat close by, or redirect his route with early contact. That and the man over the top can't be so far away or slow in getting near Davis in help.
It's like the 2 defenders think that just by standing somewhat close by to Davis they have him well defended when in fact neither player is actually doing anything other than getting outrun by a faster player.
I thought about this after I re-watched the game and it is just almost impossible to cover VD when he has a legit offense. He is faster than any LB in the league, and no db can press him. Malcolm Jenkins tried to play bump and run on him, which he is normally very strong at with tight ends especially, and it didn't even make VD slow down a bit. He just ran right through him and past him every time he covered him. If you triple cover him than Gore or Crabtree or anyone else is going to burn you. It is insane how much of a difference they have made since last season with no offseason and a new coach.

he's 6-3 and like 250+
What's more risky, defending him with a player capable of staying near him and possibly getting out jumped by a deep pass if it's accurate enough, or defending him with a slow player who will get burned on a deep pass or simply out run on a short pass for tons of yards after the catch? At least the smaller faster defender can slow him down on short passes for help to come, and he can stay close on deep passes and only get beaten by perfect throws or hops from Davis.

with a 6-3 TE, i fear him eating me up consistently in the middle than an outlier deep play (esp with zone coverage)

I think I would rather give the ball to Darren sproles on 4th and 1 than brandon jacobs

Can anyone name a more useless big RB than Jacobs? Not to mention dumber

One of these passes was simply a superbly thrown pass from Smith when Jenkins was only trailing by a yard or two right up against the sideline. Another Jenkins got beaten right off the line of scrimmage giving up the inside of the field and all that room to run. That and Harper was so deep and so slow to help out when Davis got past Jenkins that Smith only needed to throw the ball over Jenkins to complete the pass.
The smaller players can't jam or redirect him, but they can stay close enough that if they play safe only giving up the underneath passes by not playing aggressive and allow him to beat them deep they will have players behind them to help if Smith trys to test his luck throwing over the top.
Its a situation where if you allow the underneath you are giving up yards but playing safe. It sucks consistently giving up somewhat cheap yards but you aren't getting beaten for TD's. Teams playing tight at the line of scrimmage are gambling hoping they can slow him down which no one has yet been able, and their deep men have all been too slow getting over and helping with the passes over the top.
