it's not about tv markets. that was when cable was at its height.

now it's about having a large inventory of quality matchups. add clemson and fsu, that gvies the sec even more good games.

I totally agree. The more big name programs/universities that's added to conference, the more the luckily hood that the conference has a marquee game on a weekly basis if not multiple games. That in itself will draw viewers.

Yep, Clemson and Georgia is already a rivalry that was pretty damn fierce in the 80’s and them against Auburn, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee would be pretty damn good to along with some others

i fear that as well, which is why i've always said i wish they'd turn it into more of how European soccer plays.
You have your 4 major conferences and then your 2nd level of 4 conferences.
You come out last in the major conference, then see you later, you're getting relegated.
Cincy wins their conference, ULL wins their, they get to move up to the big boy conference and make more money, and maybe they don't lose their coaches.

I would love for the sec to add Clemson, FSU, UNc, UVA, VTech, Duke, NCState.

I don't get the point in just taking 2 teams at this stage. Just rip the bandaid off.

I would be surprised if the big 10 wasn’t looking into expanding into the Florida tv market. I think one of miami/fsu will get an invite….probably miami due to better academics.

Only a matter of time before Clemson joins the SEC. Probably fsu and unc also. Notre dame definitely ends up in the big 10 at some point.

They are not inviting a school that is not in the Association of American Universities (AAU).

If they stick with the AAU group of schools, their only realistic options will depend on what they prioritize the most.

If it's football and TV revenue, they will likely poach a couple more from the PAC-12 (Oregon and UW make the most sense), and of course they will make an exception and try to lure ND away from the ACC (where they participate in all other sports). They'd likely need one more to make 20.

If it is based purely on academics, and/or basketball, then some other schools come into play like raiding the ACC (NC, Duke, or UVa) or picking off a school from the Big 12 (specifically Kansas). I suppose Stanford could be an option here too.

Other AAU schools who might be options just don't seem like they would be in demand, either for football, basketball, or purely to boost their academic reputations beyond what they already have (Pitt, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Cal, or GT).

As has been stated, there are only about 8 schools that add value to the Big Ten and SEC. They will split evenly.

Oregon, Washington, Virginia and North Carolina to the Big Ten.

Clemson, Virginia Tech, Miami and Florida St to the SEC.

Notre Dame is the wild card. If they go to the Big Ten, then Virginia or North Carolina will go to the SEC instead.

Someone will want Oregon for the Nike money.

Oregon State has very little to offer but would be a cultural fit for the Big Ten East.

I feel bad for Utah. Built up their program, earned their way into a power conference, and now they're back to square one.

i see people saying this alot and not providing a reason as to why.

notre dame is not apart of AAU and the Big10 has been trying to get them for years. AAU is completely irrelevant to this.

It's been reported universally through B1G sources that AAU membership is critical to any school not named Notre Dame for admission. Nebraska was very lucky that they were accepted before they lost their AAU membership.

Notre Dame has a history, academic reputation and brand that makes them a unique exception (hypocritical as it may be).

In fact, it seems the B1G rejected the idea of taking OU with Texas.

quote:

@ESPNRittenberg
Heard today from several people that B1G only would be interested in adding schools from the AAU (Nebraska no longer, but was when it joined league). Texas is AAU member, along with Pac-12 schools like Cal, Washington, Colorado, USC, UCLA, Oregon, Stanford. Oklahoma is not AAU.

AAU with the huge research dollars and prestige connected to it matters to the B1G.

Big 12 is done.
What is left of the PAC12 will take Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Kansas State and probably TCU.

No one want to touch Baylor.

You've got it backwards. The Pac 12 is done. The Big 12 will poach whoever they want from the Pac 12 and I don't know what happens to the leftovers. If they don't get Oregon someone else will just for the Nike money but after that who knows. The Big 12's time zones are more attractive for television contracts than the Pac 12's time zone is.

Also your super conferences may not stop at 16 each. Big Ten has already hinted at jumping to 20 teams and if they do other conferences will follow. So it could be 80 teams instead of 64.

If the Big10 is going to 20 like some suspect i think they would be wise to go after Colorado, Utah, Kansas and Notre Dame. The Colorado Utah and KS would help bridge that gap to CA and ND just makes too much sense for the Big. Big12 can take the scraps of the Pac12 and maybe the ACC can back fill with WV, Memphis, Cincy and UCF (if they would take it)

No one really wants Colorado. The people who run that university haven't really given a shite about college athletics since Gary Barnett left.

I’m of the opinion that ESPN and FOX are the people actually running the show here. If I’m at FOX, I’m pushing hard to end the PAC12 because FOX the opportunity here to keep all the PAC12 teams under their umbrella while paying for one less power conference.

Get the B1G to snag Oregon, Washington and Stanford. I think this would force Notre Dame to join the B1G as well. I don’t think ND football is subject to the ACC grant of rights.

Get the Big XII to snag Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah. The Big XII will likely continue to be a FOX conference given their ruined relationship with ESPN.

Get the Mountain West, another FOX conference, to snag the PAC leftovers.

I think the full ACC teams are stuck because I don’t see ESPN having the SEC poach a conference it already has the full rights for, and the B1G won’t want enough ACC teams to end the grant of rights when there are plenty of good west coast teams available.

The LA school moves change the college picture in a huge way. Bigger then the TX OU move to the SEC. A few random thoughts while I process this mega event:
* NCAA in D-1 football is history
* So much for the often spoke of Power 5
* Welcome to the Power 3 world …. or 2 1/2 with the ACC
* Guessing Norte Dame will have to choose a conference
* Big 10 is not finished yet …. ND, WA, OR all on the table
* ACC current lineup is pretty well locked up to 2036 with there revenue share deal
* PAC-12 & Big-12 ? Will scramble to add schools from the remaining sub-conferences
* SEC - will they reach out to the west coast? WA or OR?

A phrase from the past, “What a revoltin’ development this is”.
