I could see Mississippi State giving him a raise to keep him. They are very motivated to keep him around. I won't pretend to know who Maggard is targeting though.

yeah, they would definitely throw more money to him, and that might well be what keeps him there.....one of the most likely reasons, IMHO.

But maybe having his first shot for a HC gig might out weigh the cash? At least we can hope, lol.

All I know for certain is that it is fantastic to have someone likke Maggard on board and working on this. Well, and also that I am glad that I will not to either make the hire, or be the one to step in after Robe.

I think you have me mistaken with someone else.

But there is no one outside of Lafayette, LA that thinks ULL is a better job than Rice

Poster never said we’re a Top 25 team

If ULL was a top 25 job, they would never leave the rankings. So they would & should be a top 25 team. They would make the postseason every year. And they would easily finish atop that conference every season.

But none of this happens, which is why the job is correctly slotted where I had it.

I think calling it a top 25 job was aggressive. However, it certainly has the potential to become one with the facilities, fan support, and the amount of talent nearby. Combine all of that with a respectable program history, the baseball program has certainly not hit its ceiling in terms of prestige. What it really boils down to is how much are we willing to invest in the program now that we will have to begin to pay a coach a competitive salary. I don't think that will be a problem tbh. Cajun fans take pride in the baseball program and will be willing to step up to keep it successful/improve it.

It certainly has room to grow, but that conference will hold it back from where ULL fans really think it can be.
There are a lot of schools playing D-1. A top 40-50 program is legit.

Yeah that's fair but the conference itself has room to grow as it has teams in it that have been successful. Just not necessarily sustained success. There's also a potential of us actually doing something in the next conference realignment now that we have a competent AD and tangible improvements have been made on our facilities since the last realignment.

And even with the conference in its current state, I think we could still be consistent top 25 ranked team for the other reasons mentioned. But it would be much easier in a improved conference.

Hopefully Travis Jewett

He was the top assistant coach at the school that just won the college world series. Would be a slam dunk hire.

What about Jeff Willis at LSUE? Guy has won a lot and can recruit.

I have heard that he would only leave for Rice.

I am puzzled that he’s not being mentioned by any UL people, though.

Do they think he is beneath them? (Obviously LSUE is beneath ULL, I understand that).

You're only really hearing stuff from fans with lofty expectations. Maggard does his searches in private and without many leaks. All of "insiders" were saying that we were going to hire Brent Pry and it turned out to be Billy Napier. Dr. Maggard released this today:

Dear Cajun Nation,

Earlier this week, we laid to rest our beloved friend and coach, Tony Robichaux . A developer of men, one of Coach Robe's greatest legacies will be the immense impact he had on everyone with whom he came into contact. Knowing how challenging the past several days have been, please know Kerry and I will continue to lift each of you up in thought and prayer over the days, weeks and months to come. A transition like this is certainly difficult, and I am so grateful for the love and support this community has given to the Robichaux family and our Ragin' Cajuns Baseball program.

As we "prepare to progress" by moving Louisiana Baseball forward, please understand the task at hand is not to replace Tony Robichaux , as that would be impossible. Rather, we will set out to identify our next Head Coach who will possess the character and standards our baseball program stands for and is accustomed to. During our search process, we will be quick but not hurried. We will commit to finding a coach who prioritizes the academic success of our student-athletes, focuses on the hearts of those he coaches, recruits relentlessly, and is a proven winner.

In similar fashion to previous searches, I will have no further public comment until the time arrives that we announce our new coach. Due to the notoriety and success of Louisiana Baseball, there will be great interest and speculation associated with this search. Thus, unless you hear information directly from me, please do not assume it to be accurate.

On behalf of University President Dr. Joseph Savoie and our entire Athletics Department, allow me to thank you for your commitment, loyalty and unwavering support of our amazing University and student-athletes.

Sincerely, Bryan Maggard, Ph.D.
Director of Athletics

Here's Kendall Rogers' take on the opening:

quote:

First things first, the Louisiana job is a very good one. Yes, the Cajuns aren’t in a Power Five conference, but they operate like a Power Five program. UL has a premier facility in Russo Park that can hold up to 7,000 fans, and the fan base is incredibly passionate and gives the program quite the impressive home-field advantage. Louisiana also is in a solid baseball conference and has name recognition not only in the State of Louisiana, Texas and other areas, but also the country. Some have called UL a potential Cal State Fullerton of the Deep South, and I’d agree with that assessment. The potential at this program is off the charts and Maggard knows that.

The fact that we are searching for a new baseball coach still doesn't feel real to me. Robe has been the one constant of UL athletics for my entire life.

I know, right? It really hits me sometimes.

I also have a hard time imagining that first home game. It will be so freaking weird to see someone else in the dugout, going to the mound, etc.

Deggs will have first shot. If he turns it down it will be Riser or Hill. Gautreau won’t leave State and will wait his turn for a P5 job. Barbier and Davis don’t have enough track record, Cannizaro would not be a fit following Robe

Gautreau was at a restaurant in Lafayette today, seems illogical that he’d be here if he truly was not interested in the position.

And it’d be great if he succeeds enough while here to be able to write his ticket to his next gig.
