I'll disagree because baseball relies on more than just plain athleticism, football and basketball it is a major sticking point outside of a few positions. Baseball may be more even instead of majority white but I think you would have a more healthy representation since foreign born players make up a good chunk of MLB.

Exactly

It's nothing but more vapid virtue signaling to change history so we can "feel better"

Was it wrong to not allow black players to play in MLB? Sure. But that doesn't mean you alter MLBs history to retroactively "right" that wrong. The records of the league are the records of the league as it has existed throughout its history. Just because the makeup of league was once different doesn't mean players who played in completely different league should be incorporated into the record books of separate league.

If you want to have records to combine the stats/history of all American leagues...feel free. But the Negro league was never part of MLB. So neither should the records.

That would be like the SEC recognizing Arkansas' SWC championships as "SEC Championships"

Holy shite, I never knew that about Cobb.

Yeah, seems like he's been unfairly labeled.

The author who wrote the book painting Cobb as racist was found out to be a fraud. This entire narrative about Cobb is make believe.

The BIG10 takes credit for Nebraska's 3 National Championships in the 90s....if you have ever watched the BIG10 Network and their countdown of the greatest BIG10 teams of all-time.

I think both sides taking a hard stance for or against this are being insincere.

People who think the Negro league stats are exactly right and should be accepted full on with no second guessing, yea probably not….

People who think none of them should count and that there is no way the MLB stats from the 1920’s could possibly be wrong, or that some of the Negro league players wouldn’t have been some of the best MLB players of all time, yea you’re wrong too…

Overall I like trying to include them, guys like Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, Cool Papa Bell, would have dominated the MLB back then. Meanwhile Ted Williams was hitting .400 in the 1940’s against guys who wouldn’t made have the local high school team in the 1970’s. Cy Young was striking out guys swinging 50oz bats while smoking cigarettes and drinking whiskey in the dugout…

I think in general all old stats need to be taken with a grain of salt

I am fine with including the Negro League stats. I mean as others have said Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb and Cy Young did not play the best competition given the segregated leagues. What if Joe DiMaggio had spent more time playing with and against black players and pitchers? Would he still have his 56 game hitting streak if he had to bat against the best pitchers white and black?

I don't mind bringing their stats into MLB, but they altered the criteria for guys to be ranked.

It was a min 3,000 plate appearances to be included in the career average, slugging and OPS.

Gibson did not have 2,500 plate appearances.

Another victory for culture WARriors

Seriously though who even cares about stats from guys playing 100 years ago outside trivia purposes?

There was no point in adding these stats to MLB records.

Congrats to Eduardo Rodriguez for being the new career leader in batting average since PAs apparently no longer matter.
