Some people are born gay and it is simply a birth defect. If it was not, a man could get a man pregnant and woman could get a woman pregnant!

Yes, it necessarily implies that.

No it doesn't. FWIW this isn't my belief, but just so you understand why your statement wasn't accurate:

One could hold the view that all humans are born heterosexual by nature and that due to environment, nurture and/or choice some choose to be homosexual. Thus, your assumption that if homosexuality is a choice then heterosexuality is also a choice is not necessarily true logically speaking.

Again, this isn't my view, just pointing out the logical flaw.

My point is - these people are not born that way. I believe they are legitimately attracted to members of the same sex the same way I'm attracted to members of the opposite sex.

But it's not a clearly definable genetic characteristic. It's simply aesthetics and environmental factors. That's no way to determine a class of people. Saying gays are a class unto themselves equivalent to blacks is ridiculous. It's the same as saying that people who like certain tv shows or certain soda brands should be equated with various races.

One is an immediately identifiable ethnicity of humans with millenia of shared culture, history, struggles, and dialects... the other is just who you like to frick. They're not the same thing.

if it was environment or nurture the person is not responsible for their orientation and it would be immoral to discriminate against them (even if you contend the orientation should preferentially be straight)

the contention that gay people want to be gay strikes me as generally ridiculous - most gay people I've heard talk about it agonized and suffered socially because their orientation is not considered acceptable.

No one is arguing that they should be discriminated against.

The coach is arguing they should not be protected from discrimination like other minorities

meh...I kind of disagree, I think this is being blown out of proportion. The guy doesn't feel like they should receive extra protection...I agree with him.

Wouldn't nurture and environment determine someone's favorite color, or favorite brand of car, or favorite website? Do we have anti-discrimination laws set up specifically for these people? Are they equated with other, actual, protected races?

Has anyone ever been beaten to death for liking the color blue?

There are laws against beating people to death regardless of the motive. What is your point?

I think we can start worrying about that issue when we can show cases of being being fired or beaten up for liking the wrong color

We are talking about discrimination here. You took my quote completely out of context.

What a bout when people get fired for having the "wrong" religious beliefs?

well that would depend wouldn't it?

if you fired someone for being christian or muslim then you should lose that discrimination suit.

if on the other hand you were fired for harassing your colleagues with your proselytizing or referring to a person as a dirty jew then I think you should obviously be fired for that

So then you agree this coach shouldn't be fired for voicing his personal opinion that is informed by his religious beliefs on a political hot button issue.

It would be similar to firing someone for openly supporting pro-life legislation.
