NBA says merchandise sales on its online store were up 25 percent this season over last, establishing a new record. Have to think it would have been higher had the transition to Nike gone smoother.

To tie a bow on 2017-2018 NBA regular-season viewership: the league on national TV outlets averaged 1.28 million viewers (TNT/ABC/ESPN/NBA TV). It was second year of new media rights deal. That number is +8% from 2016-2017 and best since 2013-2014 season

Would you look at that.

I suppose it helps when your league commissioner isn't a buffoon.

It's funny how Trump supporters always ignore the NBA when they talk about certain industries being in decline after speaking out against Trump. No professional sports league is more outspoken against Trump than the NBA yet their league is thriving.

The NBA changes with the times better than any other pro league in the world.

NFL: Clueless money grubber owners and commish
MLB: Stodgy old school unwritten rules isolate casual fans
NHL: We still have that?
NBA: The most accessible superstars on the planet

That's cool. I just like baseball better. None of those factors you listed will ever change that.

Plus the NBA postseason is downright atrocious.

One of my favorite Onion headlines: "NBA Playoffs Interrupted by Start of NBA Preseason".

Attendance on its own isn’t that useful because some of these teams are literally giving away tickets.

Very True. ANd that's why I added viewership too. However it does measure a general appetite and popularity of your product. If someone gave me free tickets to sport I disliked or team I couldn't get behind I wouldn't take them.
Also, concessions, parking and other ancillary revenue from people IN your arena is much more important than just ticket revenue.

The NBA is amazing. Even if I’m not watching, I’m following everything on social media and the content is awesome. The NBA has successfully created the male soap opera. No shame in admitting that. Add to that that basketball is on a direct path to take over as the nations biggest sport (and maybe worlds) and you get this success.

I disagree. I don't think that a playoff system should include more than half the teams. The NBA has by far the least important regular season because of this.

A reasonable viewpoint. But even given that, the level of play exhibited and the entertainment that comes from that keeps it far from being "atrocious"
