It wasn't that close. Lowe said Smith can be competent on defense at times while Crawford has been consistently awful on D.

I think George Karl and Lionel Hollins have a better claim to this. The Grizzlies got better after trading away a guy many people consider a star.

Mike Conley stepping up to his potential helped the transition tremendously.

Gotta consider Mike Woodson also. He improved a team hovering around .500 last year and that includes him going 18-6 in those last 24 games last season (the team was 18-24 before he became head coach)

Yeah I just don't understand giving it to a guy who did basically what his team was supposed to do. He is easily the best coach in the league, but I feel like you could find some more deserving guy this year.

Lots of pronouns in your post. Are you saying Pop is easily the best coach? Or Woodson?

I still think Spo deserves the award. He's created a lethal offense that keeps going regardless of who is playing on the court. They're on a 7 game win streak even though Wade, Bosh, or LeBron have been sitting out most of those games. The team is breaking the record for corner 3s in a season and percentage of shots as corner 3s. And even with people saying the team's defense had slipped for half the season, they're now back in the top 5 of the league in defense as well as #1 on offense.

Nate Robinson should be 6moy. He's been better than Smith and Crawford all season.

I think Mark Jackson has a better claim than Pop as well.

The spurs are the same place they were last season

The Grantland article on the Heat offense was a good read.

ETA: The average fan sees Lebron, Wade and Bosh on that team and think any coach could do what Spoelstra does.

They really should go back and watch some games from that 2011 season and compare it to today. The evolution of all three's game and the offense is directly related to Spo in my opinion. The 2011 Heat played a lot like the Thunder do. Lots of isolation. The evolution is real.

And yeah, I love Zach Lowe's work. I credit him for making Bill Simmons sound sane this season when discussing basketball.

People who aren't Grizzlies fans don't have much of an oppurtunity to see Gasol play night in and night out. He doesn't always have the flashy numbers, but he's always one of the best players on the court. he has zero weaknesses. Great defender, passer, rebounder, and scorer when need be, it's laughable that he was left out of the All-Star game.

Beautifully put.

He's also fantastic from the line and has a really underrated mid-range game. He's now forcing people to cover him outside. If they don't, he'll hit from 16, and if they don't, he finds the cutting man or drops it off inside.

There was a great article in ESPN today about the Grizz: LINK

quote:

Gasol has emerged as one of the NBA’s most interesting two-way players. He’s simultaneously cerebral and emotive, deferential and assertive. He’s happiest when playmaking, but still gets the urge to work over a smaller defender down on the box. That instinct is a good one, because the Grizzlies need Gasol’s scoring to be successful.
