The Thunder-Mav rivalry was a thing in the making, however they blew it.

However, Thunder Up!

It was going to be a 5-10 year rivalry that was gonna be so fun...throw young teams like Houston into the mix with superstar teams like Denver and Minnesota...Was going to be great basketball out west. As a Mavs fan, Im still not convinced the team will be better with AD and Flagg in place of Luka. The team was just built to play around Luka...but this year they didn't get to play more than 10-15 games healthy. Either Luka was hurt, Kyrie was hurt, Lively was hurt, PJ was hurt, or some combination of all of them. Kyrie is an incredible score first guard, but he can't get the bigs or the shooters involved like Luka. It will turn into to nothing but Kyrie pick and roll game with AD or let them go iso. Dallas needs a true PG to get the offense going...let Kyrie play off ball some like he has the last couple years. Help take wear and tear off him too. Dinwiddie, Hardy, Exum, Christie, Williams, Klay. None of the guards on the team look to get other guys involved. All score 1st guys or off ball shooters.

Honestly it will be hard to tell anything based on the first season because Kyrie won't be healthy til half way through and Flagg still a rookie. The next year is when you can make a judgement...but now you've got AD and Kyrie a full 2 years older, who knows what happens with Klay by then, and you still gotta hang on to your guys like PJ, Lively, Gafford, etc. I'm just not super optimistic about how it's gonna work out.

Dallas is gonna have to blow it up and start a full rebuild around Flagg. Get some talent that fits his window. But knowing Nico, he'll probably trade the #1 pick for Embiid.

I've never seen anyone call him the next MJ. I have seen people say that he physically looks like MJ on the court. Zero people have said he had the drive of MJ or the actual game of MJ.

He’s unguardable. Minnesota’s defense is good, he picked them apart and made it look easy.

Difference this time is there is no 3 stars trying to be the “1”. Everyone knows and appreciates their place. Build 1 had 3 alphas. So much better team play now. Also better coaching tbh.

What?

KD was the oldest one of those three stars at 23 at the time of that Finals. They were also going against an insanely dominant trio of Lebron, D Wade, and Bosh with the Heat. This Thunder team is also one of the deepest teams in recent memory of the NBA. Kind of crazy to put that first finals as some sort of indictment of KD, Russ, and Harden.

Harden came off the bench but it was “three alphas”

Harden definitely had that alpha mindset, he’s always thought he was the best.

You guys have no idea. They all had the alpha “mindset”. Their pure talent allowed them to win a lot. But that meant they were never team type players. They each wanted the rock. Harden wanted to start. Russ wanted some spotlight. KD wasn’t aggressive but was the star.

Basically whats being lost is they never had that team chemistry as it was too many alphas. Harden left but Russ/KD still had alpha in them and they melted vs GS up 3-1.

This current build 2 isn’t like build 1. They honestly play great “together” and know their places. Its hard to find that at this level. Most teams role players are jealous of the big dogs. Not so with Thunder. They appreciate each other. They all buy in to team ball.
