Probably still a better GM than their previous guy.

ESPN story reported with @WindhorstESPN and @ramonashelburne: As LeBron James' Friday deadline to enter free agency looms, pressure mounts for Lakers to acquire Kawhi Leonard in a trade.
quote:
Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn Story includes Lakers working to acquire a future first-round pick with a willingness to accept salary dumps for 2018-19 season. Lakers could flip a pick into a potential Leonard trade, and still keep one max salary slot open for free agency.
quote:
As LeBron James remains hesitant to be the first superstar to decide on the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency, pressure is mounting for the Lakers front office to execute a trade with the San Antonio Spurs to acquire disgruntled All-NBA forward Kawhi Leonard, league sources told ESPN. There's a race to secure Leonard before James is faced with deciding whether to become a free agent on Friday, especially with concern that Oklahoma City's Paul George is no longer assured of signing with the Lakers, league sources said.
quote:
While the Lakers came away feeling like San Antonio "shut the door on us" and the conversation never progressed or included a formal trade offer, the Spurs haven't ruled out sending Leonard to any destination, in the Eastern or Western Conference, league sources said.
quote:
Now, the price for Leonard would be substantial. The Lakers could have to surrender a combination of former first-round picks from Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart and future first-round picks and perhaps restricted free agent Julius Randle in a sign-and-trade agreement. The Lakers have been hunting a future first-round draft pick on the trade market in recent days, league sources said. That pick could be used to sweeten a prospective trade opportunity. The Spurs could also push the Lakers to take an unappealing contract off their books. Those are all deal points that would be applicable to leverage, which belongs to the Spurs as long as Lakers president Magic Johnson and GM Rob Pelinka haven't delivered yet on the promise of a blue-chip free agent.
Ingram, Kuzma, Randle, Hart, multiple first round picks AND taking back a bad contract. Lolwat?

Though this news about Lebron waiting things out is great for leverage for SAS. They certainly can make LAL overpay if Magic really thinks Lebron may no go to LAL if another big star doesn't sign up first.
San Antonio is in a great spot here. They can purposely wait it out and hope Lebron stays in CLE and away from the West or tell LAL they have to pay up to an absurd amount to get Kawhi, which in turn gets you Lebron.

Looks like Magic is gonna have to honor his word and step down

The timing of this piece is strange. I can almost guarantee this info came from the Spurs.

Though I wouldn't rule out Lebron's camp either just to put the pressure on LAL to make something happen first before he signs.

That's wild. The Lakers do need something to sell Lebron/PG on though. Signing and trading Randle is going to be complicated, he may not go for that.

Yeah that’s why I think it’s the Spurs leaking this. They know the one team with plenty of assets that they could bend over in a Kawhi trade is the Lakers. Popovich also knows if LA does sign Lebron and PG first, he won’t be able to squeeze them for Kawhi. He doesn’t have this kind of leverage in a potential trade with Boston or Philly.

Probably but I do believe the part about Lebron not wanting to sign before they have someone else lined up. And that does give the Spurs some leverage

theres only real leverage if paul george chooses okc and i have a hard time believing thats going to happen

I think he is gonna take the money and stay in OKC. Dude had a nasty injury that could have cost him his career. He needs to get his money.
I would rather the Lakers strikeout the year and try for next year when they can get Kawhi without giving anything up.
Lebron may even do another 2 year deal with Cleveland where he can opt out after next year and then the Lakers could get both Lebron and Kawhi without taking on any bad contracts or trading any of their young played away

In a quick turnaround, the Mavericks have withdrawn their qualifying offer to Doug McDermott, league sources say. They still have interest in retaining him, but this makes it easier to clear his ~$10M cap hold. Also makes him an unrestricted free agent, broadening his market.

What's the money difference of him signing in OKC vs LA?

Many takeaways in this story. LBJ wants a quick decision...strongly considering LA...but would he come without a co-star? ...Paul George’s indecision... Spurs willingness to engage with the Lakers on Kawhi after shutting the door initially... Cavs waiting & hoping...FRIDAY looms!

Hope he comes back, but they did need to withdraw that offer for that cap hold.
That quick turnaround, plus Gortat to LAC makes it seem like DAJ is gonna happen soon

Lakers are going to be taken to the shed by the spurs

Dallas could create as much as $26M in cap space, which would include declining $5M option on Dirk and re-signing him to lower number, per @BobbyMarks42. Mavericks could be players for UFA's DeMarcus Cousins and DeAndre Jordan, and RFA's Julius Randle, Clint Capela, Aaron Gordon.

It does seem that way. They must have felt like he was going to sign the qualifying offer and screw up their cap space.

Just enough space for DAJ if they don't send off any salary back to LAC

I'm starting to have an uneasy feeling about the Lakers. Would be devastating to go 0 for 3 on LeBron, George, and Leonard
