That's more ego than competitiveness.

The ones who want to win the most will do whatever it takes to win. If you stop short of that then you can't say you're a top competitor. There is no ego involved in winning when it comes down to it. The win is all that matters.

You can't say "I want to win, but only if I do it the way I want to" and call yourself a top competitor. Harden would rather lose and look good than win and look bad.

Exactly. He wants the glory more than he wants the title. That isn't competitiveness, it's ego.

It's saying winning isn't worth it if I can't be the man getting all of the credit.

For what it's worth, when you get to the NBA you can be whatever type of player you want. But I'm laughing at Boom calling Harden's selfish attitude competitiveness.

Magic Johnson: I'll 'step down' if Lakers miss out on free agents next two summers

quote:

Saying there is "no pressure" on him entering free agency, a defiant Magic Johnson said it will not be a failure if the Los Angeles Lakers do not land a superstar this offseason and that he and the Lakers should be judged on how they do after next summer.

"No, because I told you this is [about] two summers," Johnson said when asked if it will be a failure if the Lakers don't land a max star like LeBron James or Paul George in free agency next month. "We don't know what people are going to decide. And we can't control that so if guys decide not to come here, it's not a failure, we turn to next summer. Next summer if nobody comes and I'm still sitting here like this, then it's a failure. But if you judge us on one summer that's ridiculous. Then a lot of dudes shouldn't be in their roles. Because if we're banking on one summer for the Lakers, we're in trouble."

"You have to give us time," Johnson continued. "This class, like I told you before I took the job and when I took the job, it's going to be a two-summer thing for the Lakers. This summer and next summer. That's it. If I can't deliver I'm going to step down myself, she [team controlling owner Jeanie Buss] won't have to fire me, I'll step away from it, because [then] I can't do this job."

quote:

The Lakers also reminded people that should they not land their top tier targets this summer, they want to maintain their cap flexibility to go after next year's big free agents that could include Kawhi Leonard and Klay Thompson.

"We've been strategizing for months about this," Johnson said of he and GM Rob Pelinka and their staff. "We've been really working hard... We're just meeting, meeting, meeting and looking at every free agents. You got your tier 1's, tier 2's, tier 3's and all the way down to your tier 4's [of free agents]."

quote:

Johnson said he is prepared to fly anywhere at a moment's notice once free agency begins to meet with free agents. And if things don't go as planned, the Lakers can afford to wait until next summer to try to add star power to a young promising core.

"I'm going to stay disciplined and patient," Johnson said. "I'm not going to try to win you guys [in the media] over or the fans over by making a stupid deal just to say I did something. I'm not gonna do that. So I'm gonna still be smart. I know this game of basketball frontwards and backwards. I know who can help us and who can't."

If you prioritize your own glory over winning a championship then that's selfish.

It's fine to be selfish. Whoever gets to the NBA can do whatever they want with their career, but you can't say you're the ultimate team guy if you're not willing to do whatever it takes to win.

You try to say he's the ultimate team guy, but then you say he only wants to win his way. Those are opposing concepts.

See, that's more for his glory. He wants to be the one they look up to. He doesn't care whether he wins or loses as long as he has that team that looks up to him. All ego.

Competitiveness isn't warm and fuzzy with hand holding. Real competitors are cutthroat. You're either on board with this journey or you're out.

Can an Aggie give me their take on wether Rob williams will ever live up to the Clint comps he is getting? Also should I be worried that he doesn’t care about basketball and doesn’t try often?
