Thunder are working on trade scenarios where Anthony, 34, would be moved as an expiring contract and be waived, becoming a free agent once his $28M clears waivers

Seems like OKC is trying to trade him to somewhere that’s trying to get rid of a longer contract that is cheaper per year imo. Then that team could possibly release Carmelo if they want and his contract would be off the books by next summer.

They would trade him to a team with cap space, and take back a smaller contract. Once Melo made it to the new team, he would be waived. The Thunder would also likely waive the player that they received back in the trade. The Thunder would also likely include trade compensation/cash considerations in the trade.
An example trade:
Thunder trade Melo (27 mil salary) to the Kings for Kostas Koufos (8 mil salary). They can do this because the Kings have 19 mil in cap space. The Kings then waive Melo, and the Thunder waive/stretch Koufos (2.7 mil per year for 3 years). After these transactions, Melo is now a free agent (as long as he clears waivers, which he will).
ETA: the Thunder would need to compensate the Kings for doing that trade obviously. (Pick/s and Cash)

You explained that a lot better
I hate Carmelo but I would be doing cartwheels if the Lakers could dump Deng and a pick for that albatross.

That would only really save the Thunder 2 mil in cap space this season. They need/want more savings than that (I would think). They ideally want to trade him for another smaller expiring deal.

I thought it would be more like $10 million? Which would be a shite load of savings in luxury tax

They are going to stretch whoever they get back, or stretch Melo if they can't make a trade.
If they stretch Melo, they have to pay 9.31m per year for 3 years.
If they stretch Deng, they have to pay 7.36m per year for 5 years.

Melo won’t come off the bench they said. He didn’t sacrifice his starting role in okc so he wouldn’t do it in CC.
Wow. BBB strikes again.

Its painfully clear melo is no longer worth being a starting caliber guy on playoff teams. Its gonna be funnier when Melo actually starts for Houston too

Did Melo signed with the Rockets?

Melo to the heat would be hilarious. Just for the flip flopping

He still hasn't been bought out yet.

Hardwn is still mulling it over.

It appears Lebron had been paying attention to the young Lakers for a while now

Magic Johnson on his meeting with LeBron: “The thing I was really impressed with was he knew every single guy, their strengths and weaknesses, on our team, and he was really excited about how the young guys performed last season.” Full interview w/ Magic at 3 pm on @SpectrumSN

No kidding. Why do you think the bum Clarkson and average Larry was traded to Cleveland. Lebron didn’t want him there when he got there. oh and now they have more space too.

LeGM confirmed

What role did LeBron have in Lakers signing Lance Stephenson, JaVale McGee and Rajon Rondo?
“I learned from Dr. Buss that you should always include (star) players,” Magic said. “When (former GM) Jerry West thought about bringing a player in, Dr. Buss would call me, call Kareem.”
