No? They shouldn't trade him until they get him on the court.

Either everyone sees hes regressed from his injury and Kawhi risks not getting max

OR

Kawhi plays really well showing hes healthy and the Spurs make a deal and get maximum value. You might even see contenders okay with a rental if Kawhi performs well enough.

This seems the best route for the Spurs.

I wouldn't sell right now though, not worth it.

How? Lakers waste a year of LeBron, and a year of contention.

There's a reason they're not rushing to trade him, but yes you know better than Pop and RC Buford.

Spurs probably feel good about Kawhi coming back healthy and they're not getting offers equivalent to the value of a healthy top 5 player Kawhi.

and it all but gift wraps Kawhi to the Lakers next summer

they are not rushing to trade him because they are hoping to god the celtics or the Sixers decide to get seriously involved

they are never getting this. Ever. Not now and especially not when the seasons starts

Neither player is close to as good as Kawhi.

Lakers fans are delusional.

Sure, but there's no telling if Kawhi gets traded to a team he eventually decides to sign with other than the Lakers, namely the Clippers, which has been reported multiple times the last few weeks as a legit option.

That's your opinion, more specifically your opinion as a diehard Lakers fan. I don't think Pop and RC feel like their backs are against the wall.

How do you know? You really don't at all. Everything can change the second Kawhi hits the court. Teams will get more interested in taking the risk and it might actually end in Kawhi being convinced to stay wherever hes traded.

They can try and trade him at the deadline.

Your leverage is lower at the deadline because you have to sell and are up against a deadline. It works both ways.

Plus, if Kawhi is dissatisfied and makes it clear he's out, what leverage do you have left as the Spurs.

With LeBron James joining the Los Angeles Lakers this week, it wasn’t going to take long for LaVar Ball to publicly share his excitement.

LaVar, whose son Lonzo just finished up his rookie season with the Lakers, was asked by TMZ about James joining the team at a promotional event for his Junior Basketball Association on Tuesday.

“LeBron got a four-year deal, right? I hope he gets four [championships] in a row,” LaVar said. “If not, I guarantee two when all my boys on the Lakers with him. Game over.”

quote:

“The Warriors can sign Boogie, Prince, Michael Jordan, anybody they want,” LaVar said. “They still ain’t gonna win with this team right here. Lakers with LeBron? You don’t give my son the best player in the game and don’t think he gonna win no championships.”

you think it's more likely he decides to reup with a team if they get him in the summer or the deadline?

very true. Their franchise player is demanding a trade and every single avenue they have gone down to create a market has told them to frick off. Yea, they are in a great spot

How do you know?
the celtics not offering Tatum or brown and the Sixers not offering fultz or Embiid or Simmons for starters

and the spurs lose leverage because they are up against a deadline and take a lesser deal than they could get right now. Great plan

Not really if there's a team that believes acquiring Kawhi makes a difference towards achieving a season success. You really dont know who could Pop up in the east.

Kawhi would be risking his own future earnings if he decides to go into the season in a state of protest. He would certainly not be helping his uncles PR duties, which are probably overwhelmed as it is.

There's a different way to rationalize this other than the Lakers centric view.

That's why I said after Boogie, the Spurs leverage is in the toilet at the beginning of this.

He is well known to be openly protesting the Spurs now.

Add the potential of "entering the year in open protest destroying what little trade value he has left" as another reason the spurs would be stupid to start the year with him

The only way the season helps is if the Spurs can repair their relationship and people think there's a legit chance he stays in SA. There is little evidence to support this happening.

Or if Kawhi opens up his list to other teams.

Yeah, I think damage repair at SA is not the problem. The main concern for LAL is him pulling a PG13 and ending up happy in the east after a trade.

And the likelihood of that happening if the spurs hold onto him and make a deadline deal is obscenely low
