The NBA put its best and shiniest presents under the tree of the American television viewer on Christmas Day and America said, no thanks.

The NBA, which uses Christmas Day to showcase their best games and talent to jumpstart their season, had their gifts returned by viewers who were less than enthused.

According to DEADLINE Hollywood:

The National Basketball Association’s day-long celebration of sports led the demos, scoring a 1.1 and 3.74 million total audience for its hours-long programming for ABC and ESPN. That’s the good news – the bad news is that’s down massively from past performances. In a season where the NBA is trying to lure back fans who were turned off by last season’s overt politics and the less-stimulating bubble version of the sport, it shows there’s a lot of ground to make up.

quote:

The awful Christmas Day ratings strongly suggest that fans have neither forgotten the NBA’s business relationship with slave-labor loving China, nor the league’s hypocritical social justice stances of last season.

It's kinda weird.

It would be like me looking up golf ratings when I don't care about golf.

eta: and here comes the downvotes from people that think Trump won.

These guys need mental help. I mean every sports viewership is down compared to last year.

Imagine obsessing about your fears and insecurities.... all day long.

Has to be poverty and ignorance. I actually feel bad for them because it must be a miserable life.

I actually liked the bubble tournament more than the playoffs, tbh.

This really is curious. I'm not really sure how that is possible with so many people sitting at home this year. Even with people boycotting for whatever reason it should have gone up.

People are realizing how little sports mean overall.

I was a sports junkie, I love all sports, but this year I’ve watched less than ever. I watch the saints / LSU and I’ll watch the pels, but otherwise I just don’t care anymore. I’ll put it on as background noise when I’m outside on the patio on Sunday but that’s about it.

I’m not saying I’m the norm, but it has kinda caught me off guard how little I care.

Meanwhile, Opening Night did its best rating since 2017. Ratings are a stupid gauge, and no the NBA isn’t dying

TurnerSportsPR @TurnerSportsPR TNT delivered the most-watched NBA Opening Night since 2017; @BleacherReport was the #1 most engaged sports media brand across social media platforms for the day.

Obviously not if you feel the need to inject Trump into a MSB thread. Admit it. You have a problem.

I'm not lying, joking, or exaggerating when I say I didn't even know the NBA season had started (didn't it just end like a month ago?).

I used to watch the Christmas Day games in the middle of the afternoon, but my family didn't even turn the television on at all this year. Just cooked, played with the kids, etc.

I imagine 100s of millions of people did the same thing.

So you didn't see the OP I guess.

Either way it's easy af bait. Look how it got you, a poster who doesn't post a lot, to come out because you couldn't resist.

So who really has the occupied head space?

It is peculiar for sure. Fans not being present really plays a big part imo. Mostly anybody I've talked to in real life have said they have trouble taking sorts serious right now without the fans in attendance.

Imo once things return back to normal and stadiums are packed to capacity again(whenever that may be), we will then see ratings return back to normal
