Good kid. Good dad.
Meanwhile, there is a huge drama going on in one of the youth leagues out here, because one of the 5/6 year old coaches said that kids won't play in game until they "prove they are man enough to play in the game'.
5 and 6 year olds.
With coaches like that, no wonder kids are tired of it by 14. And make no mistake, many HS coaches are utter and complete pricks. There are some good ones out there, sure, but my experience playing HS ball and being around HS ball is that most of them are not very good people.

My son decided to become a televangelist instead of pursuing football

Sounds like he started smoking pot
Smart decision. 98% of football players can't continue beyond high school. You can smoke pot all of your life.

Sounds like he was scared of August football
EVERYBODY is afraid of August football in the South. Only those with a high tolerance for being miserable subject themselves to August football.

August Football in Louisiana:
You are very close to heat exhaustion and probably have some symptoms of it. You can actually see the steam coming out from inside your helmet. Your uniform is totally drenched in sweat as well as all of your undergarments. You have bits of grass all over your body including every crevice AND every blade of dry cut grass sticks to you for the entire football practice period. Mud and/or sandy dirt all over your body including every crevice and it sticks there due to above mentioned sweat. So tired that you feel like you are going to die sometime in the next ten minutes. People running at you and crashing into you. Hitting the hard clay ground with a crunch. And Good Lord don't let your head snap into that hard clay ground when you fall backwards because you will probably be knocked unconscious if you do. Coaches yelling and "teaching".
Why would anybody pass up that kind of enriching and fun experience? It's almost as much fun as Recruit Basic Training and Jump School at Ft. Benning.

Kids should make their own decisions regarding their involvement in activities outside of school. I don't push mine to do anything, but support him in whatever he does. But he will do something, sitting and laying around is not an option. He chooses to play football and I'm proud of him for that. But if we are going to discourage our kids from playing football in their youth, including high school, we need to quit watching on Saturday and quit talking about it on the Rant, if not just ban it. But its not for everyone and there is a risk of injury greater than other sports. It's the kids decision in the end. I'm proud of mine because he plays football and is good at it, is a near 4.0 student and plays golf as well. At the same time I am just as proud of my older son who has a good job and is married and didn't play any sports in high school. Everyone's different, but don't be hypocritical by discouraging football, but wanting others to play where we can be entertained.

Been there..done that to both. And I'd advise most any sub 6'-0" tall kid(especially WASPs), to invest in golf clubs, tennis rackets,etc..before spending excess time into Football or Basketball.
Unless he can kick and charts a path to Chris Sailer camp,etc..the odds of getting a D-1 ride or advancing far, is reduced to life lessons.

14 is pretty old for 8th grade

Good move. Not worth it for him to play all through high school when he can do plenty of other things that he enjoys.

sounds great. be sure to pay for music lessons. it takes about 2,500 hours of serious practice with a good teacher to be good enough to make a living.
some people can do it. he won't figure it out noodling around. only rare people can self teach an instrument.
think of it like golf. you need some lessons. even pro's have guys who watch their swing and give ideas about various clubs. same with an instrument.
a few years at least.

That size at 14... Sounds like he made the right choice
