Not msny heavyweights possess the pure boxing skill as Ali in terms of footwork and ring savvy

Handspeed and footspeed were rare for a big guy

He fought like a little guy but still possessed the big punch power of the greatest heavies

His jab was sick and his footwork around that jab made him hard to Handle

All of this plus we missed a few years of his prime due to the draft fiasco.

Ali was the first heavyweight with the speed of a lightweight. He got slow in his latter years, but when he first won the title he was the quickest heavyweight that boxing has ever seen.

that and how he told everyone beforehand he would.

yeah right

I suppose you think Joe Namath is the best QB of all time. When in fact he is the worst QB in the hall of fame.

One of those 2 could very well have been given to Joe, no?

As an overall fighter Ali is superior to Tyson and would have likely used that to his advantage by taking the fight into the later rounds where he would have pulled away. I will say though that for the first few rounds, Tyson would be right there and you have to give him a puncher's chance. Even with Ali's strong chin, I don't know how many guys could stand after getting caught by Tyson in his prime

Nah, Ali won the second fight pretty easily and won by TKO in the Thrilla in Manila.

Now a strong argument can be made for Norton in Ali-Norton III.

Ali had one of if the the best jabs of all the heavy weights. No way LL beats Ali, hell LL could've beat Tyson in his early years.

I do think Tyson could've beaten Ali ealry in his career. But after Buster Douglas, Ali would have killed him.

This is what people always seem to forget. Ali is the most accomplished heavyweight in history and we didn't even get to see the best of him. He was peaking just as he got exiled. He was past his prime when he fought every big name in the golden age besides Liston and Patterson. You can see a marked difference in his fighting style against Liston, Patterson 1, Williams, Terrell, etc. versus his style later on against Frazier, Norton, Chuvalo, etc. and I'm not just talking about the rope-a-dope stuff he used against Foreman.

Watch the fights before his layoff. He never stops dancing. His jab is a rapier and he never stands still. After the layoff, he would take breaks. He's standing still to throw punches. He's a different fighter. And still is probably the greatest ever based on his resume just after the layoff.

Ali in his true prime was bigger and faster than almost everybody he fought. Liston, who is an all time great in his own right, was a bruiser who relied on size. Most people saw that match up as the quick, nimble Ali against the big, bruising Liston. The crazy thing was, Ali was actually bigger than Liston!

He was big for his era, he was the fastest heavyweight anyone had ever seen, he had pinpoint accuracy with his punches and could throw them from any angle, he had more guts and ring intelligence than any other fighter ever, and you just flat out couldn't hit him. Oh, and if you did manage to hit him, you connected with only what might have been the toughest chin in boxing history.

If you have any question about Ali's chin, just watch the Holmes fight. Holmes spent round after round actually trying to end the fight by knocking out a completely helpless Ali and he just couldn't.

I'm pretty sure I've watched every minute of footage of Ali ever recorded and I can say without a doubt, he is the greatest heavyweight ever.

I don't think so. Tyson never fought anyone with Ali's quickness or jaw. If Foreman couldn't KO Ali, I don't think Tyson would have either.

Amen!

Ali and Tex Cobb are probably the only fighters in history who could have gotten to their feet after getting hit with that haymaker that Joe Frazier threw in the 15th round of Ali-Frazier I.

Damn right. Ali took the most perfect punch ever thrown and bounced right back up. Didn't even take an 8 count.

Forget the fighting, what makes him The Greatest in my book is him standing up to the US Government when they were enslaving our people and sending kids off to death! To Ali
