OK... since today's schedule is rather underwhelming, let's argue postseason awards.

HART
Crosby was amazing for 36 games, but unfortunately, that means hes missed a quarter of the season. It appears his scoring total will be caught, and the Pens have kept rolling without him, which hurts his case. Ovie is now on pace to win the Richard, and he might catch Crosby on points. His 36 games are better than Crosby's 36 games. Of course, there's those 1st 12 games in which Ovie was mediocre at best. Still, mediocre is literally better than nothing, the Caps went 2-8-1 when Ovie didn't produce, and Ovie spent those 1st 11 games learning a new position and a new system. Head to head, I think you have to take Ovie. But if you want to give demerits for the first quarter of the year, I understand. Kane and Toews sort of cancel each other out in Chicago, and Getzlaf is quietly putting together an awesome year in Anaheim. But I'd vote for Tavares. The Isles are a horrible team without him, he has 45 points, and five game winning goals. The 5 GWG is what puts me over the edge (Ovie and Toews have 4). I'm going Tavares.

NORRIS
Doughty and Subban are the two league leaders in Corsi among those who aren't getting sheltered minutes (some guys have less shots against, but start 60% of the time in the offensive zone, where its hard to allow a shot). Either one is a worthy winner, but given Subban's offensive contributions as well, I think he's the easy choice.

VEZINA
Bobrovsky has a 931 save percentage. Niemi has a 927. Bob has a top five GAA while Niemi leads the NHL in wins. Basically, Niemi faces more shots and plays more minutes. I love the idea of a C-bus player winning an award, any award, but Niemi is one of two goalies to have faced 1000 shots (King Henry is the other). No team has relied more heavily on their goalie than the Sharks, and the Sharks are the better team. I won't bitch about Bobrovsky winning it, but I think Niemi has been better.

I figure Ovie wins the Richard, Crosby's team kept rolling w/o him maybe John wins it...this is the hardest one to call obviously alwys is...Hart goes to Crosby in an 'upset'
Norris gonna be PK I figure, I figure Doughty might deserve it too but PK gets it, they love to give stuff to Habs players, makes em feeling like they are honoring the game or something...
Vezina goes to Bobbo unsung hero narrative, small market this is why we had the lock-out narrative...

Fatty this letter was sent to me by a family friend thought you a SMU might like to read it,

Prior to my dad's passing (1977), I asked him who, in his opinion, was the best hockey player to play the game--he knew from Newsy Lalonde-to Morenz, Richard, Howe, Orr, Bobby Hull and many, many other greats (not Gretsky or Lemieux or Sid the Kid) but the greats from the early 1900's to the mid 1970's---His answer "Aurele Emile Joliat or the "Little Giant"--Aurele hit the scales at 136 pounds--five feet seven inches tall--He even played in one of the Abitibi Mill towns--that being Iroquois Falls---his NHL career was played mostly in Montreal and is the ninth highest scorer on that team to this day when most seasons averaged just 45 games---I saw him in Montreal one night in the early 1980's and he could still skate and the Forum crowd appreciated his efforts.
Anyway, here is a little poem somebody once wrote about the greatest hockey player--

Maroons, they have a good hockey team
Those Maple Leafs is nice
But Les Canadiens they are the best
That ever skate de ice

Morenz, he go like one big storm
Sil Mantha's Big and Fat
They all are good but none is quite
So good as Joliat

Joliat, he is my friend
I don't know him myself
But I knows a man who knows a man
Who knows him very well

So when I tire of traival trop
I put on coat of coon
And go to see Les Canadians
Make Mincemeat of Maroons

That was a very exciting game
The score she was a tie
And then my little Joliat
He get hanger in his eye

He take him puck at other end
And skate him down so fast
The rest of players seem dormir
As he is going past

That was the winning goal hurah
The game she come to end
I yell bravo for Joliat
You see he is my friend

Author Unknown but is humorous
sorry don't want this getting lost for Fatty and Co.

The no-brainers are the Selke and the Adams. While it's cool that Tornoto finally mad ethe playoffs and the Pens and Hawks have been awesome all year, Paul MacLean took a team that lost its two best players, and the best blueliner in the league, and still has them in the playoffs. MacLean should win unanimously for what he's done in Ottawa this year. Remarkable job.

As for the Selke, Patrice Bergeron has the 2nd best Corsi (9th best when adjusted for team), but he starts in the offensive zone only 42.5% of the time. No one is even close to that, among quality defensive forwards. He's getting the toughest minutes in the league, and still outperforming everyone. Bergeron is pretty much the only candidate, though we can throw in Datsyuk for old time's sake.

His sister is at my Wife's University I have talked to her a couple of times this year at various functions and she says Paul has always been unflappable, nothing stands in his way and he is an incredible motivator even though he justs comes across as folksy...I agree he has done an outstanding job, reminds me of when Scotty Bowman was coach of the Sabres, astute, disiplined and an incredible strategist...

I hate being ahead in terms of games played. Scoreboard watching is not fun.

I still think if they win their last two, they'll get in. Detroit just hasn't looked so good lately and knocking off Dallas Wednesday would put the Jackets in great position to finish ahead of them.

Malkin has been skating, day to day resting his shoulder but unlikely we see him again until the playoffs, no reason to play him.

Crosby, Neal, and Martin have been skating since Monday, but again, won't see them until the playoffs. Martin may not play for a few games in the first round, hard to gauge, broken bone in his hand and a 4-6 week timetable that is at about 4 weeks right now and he's skating so we'll see.

disgusted. purely disgusted. in 1st place in the northeast basically all year and choke it away at the end with dismal craptastic midget hockey like performances.

BTW, i did like your poem. thanks for sharing. I actually have a Howie Morenz replica jersey from the 30's and a Maurice Richard replica jersey from the 50's made by Ebbets Field flannels. They are probably worth a nice amount because Ebbet's field flannels has not been allowed to make them anymore since the 90's. NHL does not allow them anymore. talk about nice!

well looks like it will be our(habs-leafs) first time in da playoffs since da 70's. I already have friends in Montreal on suicide watch. dey are not happy cher. Me? i say screw it. bring it on! best rivalry in hockey betweeen the best two franchises ever.

Actually, you don't need to scoreboard watch out west. The stars last two games are against Detroit and Columbus. If they win those, they almost certainly make the playoffs. If they lose, the team they lose to probably makes it. The non-Stars games are a chance to pick up points, but I think it'll come down to those two games.

But it wouldn't kill you to win your other game. If any of the three win out, they are in.

I'd say if the Stars lose to the Sharks, were done.
