I don't know about intimidating, but just being scared to hit against has to be Nolan Ryan. I mean there are stories where people didn't see the ball out of his hand and didn't know until they heard the mitt pop. Nolan was wild early in his career also. Intimidating has to be Gibson. Don Drysdale was a mean SOB also. Lefty would be Randy Johnson again just scared to hit off of because of speed+wildness. Closer has to be Chapman, again because of speed+wildness. I'm a Reds fan, so I've watched him a lot over the years. Never knew if you were going to get "Good Aroldis" with control, or "Wild Aroldis". Dude is weird as hell also.

Joe Kelly, Randy Johnson, and Aroldis Chapman are three pretty good ones.

I’d shite on myself standing the batter box against them. I’d have no interest in increasing my chances to die trying to hit them.

Closer is a no brainer. Wild Thing Rick Vaughn. Well......after he started wearing his glasses.

You understand Vaughn only closed one game. He was a starter. Geez go back to arguing if the ball was too high to be a homer.

Oh wow. You're totally right. I forgot all about him being a starter. Brain fart.

My favorite stories are about Don Drysdale or Bob Gibson since I am too young to have ever seen them pitch beyond footage in baseball documentaries. I fondly remember some of the stories my dad would tell me about Drysdale.. I've included some of my favorite Drysdale quotes or stories.
quote:

Some of these guys wear beards to make them look intimidating, but they don't look so tough when they have to deliver the ball. Their abilities and their attitudes don't back up their beards.

"When the ball is over the middle of the plate, the batter is hitting it with the sweet part of the bat. When it's inside, he's hitting it with the part of the bat from the handle to the trademark. When it's outside, he's hitting it with the end of the bat. You've got to keep the ball away from the sweet part of the bat. To do that, the pitcher has to move the hitter off the plate.

I hated to bat against (Don) Drysdale. After he hit you he'd come around, look at the bruise on your arm and say, 'Do you want me to sign it? - Mickey Mantle

"Don Drysdale would consider an intentional walk a waste of three pitches. If he wants to put you on base, he can hit you with one pitch." - Mike Shannon

quote:

In 1965, Sandy Koufax declined to pitch the first game of the World Series because it was on Yom Kippur, a Jewish holy day. Drysdale pitched for the Dodgers instead of Koufax, giving up seven runs in 2 2/3 innings. When Walter Alston, the manager, came to the mound to remove him from the game, Drysdale said, "I bet right now you wish I was Jewish, too." The Dodgers lost the game to the Minnesota Twins 8-2 but went on to win the Series 4 games to 3.

First ones that come to mind..
Right Handed: Don Drysdale, Bob Gibson, Roger Clemens, or Nolan Ryan
Left Handed: Randy Johnson
Closers: Goose Gossage or Dennis Eckersley or Mariano Rivera

Greg Bird is a first baseman, not a pitcher.

Ryan, Johnson and Rivera. Rivera had one pitch. Everyone knew it was coming. They still couldn’t hit it.

No way on Ryan. If Richard doesn’t have the stroke Ryan isn’t even most intimidating on his own team. Gibson was downright mean

No doubt, Richard was the original "Big Unit", too bad the stroke ended his career. Gibson was a beast and a great choice. However, I wonder how overpowering the "Big Train" Walter Johnson was in his day ? The guy had to be the ultimate intimidator in the age he played and with the records he held.
