Mookie can go suck a fat one if he thinks he's gonna get more than Trout.

How can you even relate to these people anymore?

$35MM a year for 12 years?!

It’s odd how people are shocked at athlete salaries yet defend college coaching salaries.

This contract is nearly 6 times larger than any college coaching contract. I don't believe one could justify that Betts brings that much value to a team. Nick Saban, for instance, is probably underpaid if you account for how much more money the school and program have made since he arrived. Not really a good argument here. But I'm going to assume your post has something to do with college athletes not being paid.

No, that wasn’t really what I was going for.

If you look at how much college coaches are getting paid, it’s exponentially more than in the recent past.

Meanwhile, A Rod got his first 10 year, 252 million dollar deal in 2000. Juwan Howard got 7 year, 98 million without an all star game appearance in 1996.

Meanwhile in 1996, Spurrier was the first million dollar coach. In 2008, Les was the highest paid at 3.75 million, and Saban got 11 million a decade later. Position coaches are going to eclipse the million dollar mark soon at the biggest schools. In a decade, $2 million went from the salary of a very good head coach to a very good coordinator.

The salaries of athletes haven’t had anywhere near that percentage increase.

It follows the market. College football generates a ton more money than it did in the mid 90s, like exponentially more.

Meh. Spurrier was pre-BCS, Miles was pre CFP and conference networks, and I’m sure a mathematical case could be made that Saban is the most valuable state university employee in U.S. history. And I don’t see a whole lot of people on here outraged by athletes’ salaries. This particular thread seems to be focusing on the ridiculousness of Mookie Betts wanting 12 years and $420 million.

And I know for me anyway, that it’s much more the length of that than the average annual salary. I’d pay him $40 millionish for 3-4 years. But in a sport where money is guaranteed and there is a history of people falling off a cliff, anything longer than that—at that price—just doesn’t seem smart. Unless you’re Trout. That said, I’m sure he’ll get closer to what he wants than what I would give him.

I’m sure you’d have no problem explaining how you arrived at that number...

Betts, however, countered with an asking price of 12 years, $420 million.

Teams on average pay $8-9 million per win on the free agent market. Betts was worth 6.6 WAR last year. So 6.6 times 8 or 9 million.

You could quibble with the methodology, but that is almost certainly how he arrived at those numbers.

Totally depends on the dollar value of the contract.

12 years is probably too long, but 35 million AAV for Mookie is actually cheap.
