i didn't know your knowledge of an athlete validated their achievements.

Should have had cancer if she wanted to be in the top 3.
well frick it, if brain cancer is the requirement my step mom should've been a top 3 too. at 62 her "skills" are probably comparable

why are so many of you actually upset with this?

Sarcasm. I agree with you.

"Upset" is not the word. "Incredulous" is a better word. Like I said, this is like Johnny Football winning Male Athlete of the Year. Or The Interview winning Best Picture. Because apparently we just vote for the the things the most people recognize nowadays.
It's like giving Neil deGrasse Tyson Physicist of the Year every year because he's the only physicist people have heard of and he's on that TV show.

I did not know media awards validated their achievements either?
I think most athletes 1st priority is winning at their event/sport & not awards.
Get over it . She won.

they don't... but they certainly can insult and array of more qualified athletes by making an awful and embarrassing top 2.

Ronda Rousey had a better year than Davis
Ronda would kick her arse too

It's an insult and a slap in the face to female athletes everywhere who bust their arse for relatively (in terms of their male counterparts) little recognition, and then the lazy media trot out the dog and pony show as the "leaders" in your field.
If I were Clayton Kershaw or Madison Bumgarner, I'd be pissed when Derek Jeter wins the Male Athlete of the Year award over them. Because you know that's probably coming.

A kid playing little league? Let her have a life and grow up without all this hype.

So a girl is as athletic as a boy before the parties go through puberty. This is not news, nor is it news when a girl can compete with boys in athletic events because of this reality. If a girl did this in college or the minor leagues, then by all means, give her the award. However, giving this award to her without thinking about the true impact here is belittling to other female athletes who had tremendous years.
Amen! There are many female athletes (Black, White, Yellow and Brown) who accomplished a helluva lot more than Davis.

Honestly, IMO no female athlete was mentioned that makes me say "oh yeah, she should have been selected".
It's a feel good story and still a deserving recipient.

Is it AP feel good story athlete of the year? To me it's very insulting to women's sports everywhere that Davis and the brain cancer basketball girl were 1/2.
Totally discredits women achieving success at the absolute highest level. Rousey was as dominant an MMA champion could be this year. Several women won gold medals at the Winter Olympics. We had a young lady break world records swimming and win top place at Pan games. Davis played against pre-pubescent boys and her team didn't win. Congrats but she won't be playing baseball at any high level going forward. She will be lucky to be even mediocre at the high school level if she doesn't play softball.
That's the whole point, it should go to women dominating their sport at the highest pinnacle. Too much fluff, all style no substance anymore. Hell even Serena had a kick arse year.

Considering the year that Mikaela Shiffrin, Serena Williams and Odyssey Sims had, I don't think so.

It should have been Ronda or Serena and I could be happy with either of them. Both had unreal years for their sports.
Mo'ne deserves nothing.

Thanks for your 'non answer'. No girl has ever dominated in the LLWS because its not as easy as common/easy as you pretend.
What were her final stats? Was she the best pitcher at the LLWS this season?

AP has gone full retard. Equivalent to Obama winning Nobel Peace Prize.

I have no idea who this is.

All female professional athletes and olympians should be outraged.
