We can all agree that Randy didn't invent MMA. But we all have to agree that he was a true pioneer of the sport. And he is one the very few that was able to cross over into the new era of MMA.
IMO, He wasnt a pioneer of the sport.
I would consider Marco Ruas, Royce Gracie, Dan Severn, Enson Inuoe, Oleg Taktarov, Ken & Frank Shamrock, Guy Mezger, Bas Rutten, and Funaki pioneers of the sport.
To me,Randy would be more of an innovator. He continued to develope and learn as a fighter. Thats why he's still relavent and none of those other fighters listed are. BUT, he came around years after those other fighters made their impact in MMA.

MMA Retards
Being an innovator in MMA and starting MMA are two completely different worlds.
That's like saying Tiger Woods started golf because he was the first guy to really weight train.
Agree. Although I still miss the days of winner take all craziness with no weight divisions.
Reminds me of Ruas/Paul Varelans/Tank/Oleg. I think I even remember Butterbeans fat arse in a UFC event but I may be mistaken. probably pride.
Much better sport now by a mile but it was still fun during its US infancy. Its still basically in its infancy here now anyhow.

Just curious Deuce, but where do you work?
Sounds like when I used to work at Wells Fargo, everyone standing around bsing.

I started MMA in the late 80's when I pitted my boxing against Paige Russell's wrestling in the park near my house. Some of you that followed local (BR) HS wrestling probably know Paige.

Paige was my manager at Homeowners Loan. He's a good guy.
Exact replica of Sean Sherk, maybe shorter but bigger.

Rorion Gracie, technically.
original pick was rickson, but him and rorion had a falling out or disagreement at the time then royce was used.
royler was perhaps thought to be too small? not sure why he wasn't used. but that would have been even cooler because royler is about the same size as grandmaster helio gracie.

I frigging cringe everytime I hear someone say, "You like MMA? That's that Kimbo Slice thing?"
Then I poke them in the eye as hard as I can.

I used to wrestle Page during summer Freestyle. Was one of the best wrestlers Belaire ever produced. For being such a small guy, he was very strong. Saw him @ Foxy's about 10 years ago and he was enourmous.

Yep all 5' 5" of him.

I beat the shite out of him that day.

No it was Rorion not Royce who started it.
Say whatever you want, but whoever had the balls to cover their own production costs to get the original season of TUF on spike in order to get them to show it had more to do with the MMA explosion then the pioneers did. Were any of those early Gracies good at other stuff besides BJJ? I just seem to remember Royce grabbing on to some poor bastard and slowly working his way into some sort of sub his opponant had no idea how to defend.

But that wasn't what we were talking about at on page 1.

Most were pure bjj guys. If you ever get a chance look at Rickson's fights in Pride. His stand up was gawd awful, yet he is considered the best fighter amoung that generation of Gracies.
There a few exceptions though. Rolls Gracie , who died in a hang gliding accident when he was 30ish, for example was the first one to train in wrestling and incorporate those take downs into his version of GJJ.

Oh yeah, those guys were totally clueless on what was about to happen to them.

I know, it is just my opinion that MMA was near non existent before that. Before, it had about as much popularity as a wrestling org that isn't on T.V. I'm sure there were some sort of MMA tournaments before the early UFC days right? At least according to Frank Dux anyway.

There were Shooto tourneys in Japan and Vale Tudo tourneys in Brazil prior to UFC 1, but like someone said earlier trying to pinpoint the beginning of mma gets fuzzy.

Not to ask a completely ridiculous question, but is there any truth to what Frank Dux fought in Japan.
I've tried looking up some things but all I keep reading is that Frank Dux is completely full of shite.
Kumite?

I don't watch a whole lot of mma, but I plan on watching the Sat. night fight. Can someone fill me in on the specifics of the gsp/penn fight or the machida/silva fight so at least I sound like I know what I'm talking about? Or at the very least, give me some common lines that would be retarded to say so I know not to say them. Thanks

GSP/Penn fought once before- Penn domintated the stand up but GSP racked up take down points and won a close split decision.
After the fight Penn said- "I went to a bar, he went to the hospital."
Machida and Silva are both undefeated. Machida has a very technical defensive style that some say is boring, I love it. Silva is much more aggressive. Both are very good on the ground.

Thanks. I started watching at about the time Penn fought Sherk and Machida fought Ortiz, so I had seen them fight before and knew a little about their overall fighting styles but wasn't familiar with either gsp or silva.
How much will the going up in weight affect Penn in your opinion?
