MMA - Does the amount of talent between 145-170 demand another division?

FW, LW, WW are all pretty stacked with talent. Top 10 for each division is below.

In my opinion, there's enough talent there to create another division. Would this create too many divisions with a dilution of talent, or should it be done?

I would have 145, 153, 161, 170.

A few changes I could see:
Edgar, Swanson, Stephens seem like legit, true 145ers
Ortega, Holloway, Aldo, Conor, Tony seem like good fits for 153
Lee, Alvarez, Khabib, RDA, good fits for 161

FEATHERWEIGHT
Champion : Max Holloway
1 Brian Ortega
2 Jose Aldo
3 Frankie Edgar
4 Cub Swanson
5 Jeremy Stephens
6 Josh Emmett
7 Ricardo Lamas
8 Chan Sung Jung
9 Renato Moicano
10 Darren Elkins

LIGHTWEIGHT
Champion : Khabib Nurmagomedov
1 Conor McGregor
2 Tony Ferguson
3 Eddie Alvarez
4 Dustin Poirier
5 Edson Barboza
6 Kevin Lee
7 Justin Gaethje
8 Nate Diaz
9 Michael Chiesa
10 Al Iaquinta

WELTERWEIGHT
Champion : Tyron Woodley
1 Stephen Thompson
2 Rafael Dos Anjos
3 Colby Covington
4 Robbie Lawler
5 Demian Maia
6 Jorge Masvidal
7 Kamaru Usman
7 Darren Till
9 Neil Magny
10 Santiago Ponzinibbio

Why are the weight classes different in boxing than MMA?

As MMA has grown, it had to deal with a small number of people involved which meant few weight classes. Boxing was like this. I think boxing weight classes didn't really expand until the 1960s.

When the UFC was initially set up, there were no weight classes. As it's grown, weight classes have been added.

I think at some point you dilute the meaning of being a champ if you add in too many weight classes. Seeing boxers with a hundred different belts from 10 different weight classes separated by a half pound across multiple organizations always looked dumb to me

I agree - boxing has grown to have too many. I think MMA can handle it at this time as mentioned above. But I don't know if those divisions will always be like this. Historically they have been pretty full of talent. But what if they get diluted in the future - then it turns to shite.

I mean, the sport was built on 155's beating 300 lb dudes.

Lower weight classes won’t get diluted unless weight cutting rules become more strict

I wish there were less weight classes. All the 145ers could easily fight at 155.

A year later these divisions could easily become trash. If you're adding a division you don't do it because of the current surplus if talent

I'm just curious, how many adult males do you know that weigh under 170lbs? I know maybe a handful and they are all under 5'6. Why are over half the belts dedicated to 5-10% of the population? The average adult male weighs like 190. There shouldn't be 9 classes under that weight and only 2 above. That makes no sense..

I'd like to just add a 165 and move 170 to 175.

You dont understand how mma weight works. Most of these fighters are cutting 20-30 lbs of weight to make weight the day before the fight.

Also, you are thinking of a small amount of people that you know and not taking into account that mma is a global sport and not everyone is a 220lb fatass across the globe.

Fair enough, so it's not legal for a 5'8, 160 guy to fight a 5'10. 175 guy. But it's totally cool for a 6'2, 210 guy to fight a 6'8, 275 guy. Explain that to me please..

HW has a limit of 265 (or 266 for non-title fights). There is no SHw division in the UFC.

My apologies, a 6'8, 264 guy vs a 6'2, 210 guy then..

235 would be a good one. Right between LHw and Hw.

That 210 guy wouldn't be fighting at Hw though.
