I prefer ERA since that is what really matters.

Why does ERA matter? Because it was the first statistic that was universally used? Doesnt mean its a very good stat.

Because it determines the games.

If a guy is going out there and giving up 4-5 earned runs per game and your team is losing who gives a shite about any other stat?

He will be better in the NL and has a great contract. I think he would be around a 3.50 era in the NL. He still has a chance to be one of the best pitchers in baseball.

the fact that all of his numbers suggest hes really good is definitely something that is encouraging.

and that is what I am getting at.

ERA is the one big outlier.

WAR is good. FIP is good. Still striking out over a batter an inning. Walk rate is good at less than 3 per 9. Ground ball rate is above average.

Add in the fact that his BABIP is insanely high, and he would be going to Sun Trust Park with one of the absolute best defensive infields in the game? Its easy to see why he would be coveted by the Braves.

It's definitely interesting how most of his peripherals indicate he should have a lower ERA. Super consistent. Does the Rays defense suck?

and you still dont get it.

Lets say you have two pitchers. Both have given up 2 runs in 6 innings. Both go into the 7th inning and walk the next batter. They are both taken out of the game. The reliever for the first guy give up a home run. The second reliever strikes out the side.

Pitcher As final line would be 3 ER in 6 innings
Pitcher Bs final line would be 2 ER in 6 innings

Thats absurd, and helps to bring up the problem with ERA.

So it's the relievers fault Archer has been mediocre for 3 years in a row? And he's just unlucky as you have said 2 times now?

Lol. Okay.

Not really, they're not a great defensive team by any means but not terrible.

I think Archer has a good chance to do what Cole has done for the Stros. Get him in a new environment and change the scenery. The biggest problem with Archer for me is that he’s using his slider almost 20% more often this year than normally.

Let your 95-96 mph heater play and throw the slider off of that. Also has a decent changeup he could stand to throw more often

Yeah that's the flip side you hope for in trading for him, new environment with a fresh start and a new league/division allows him to meet his potential.

Was just listening to mlb radio snd the basically said the same exact thing about him. Change of scenery seems like the best thing for him.

He was providing one legitimate example as to why ERA is a faulty metric. Are you too dense to understand that?

Another example is that, if you have a defense with poor range across the board, you are likely to give up more hits and runs. If you have a defense that is far superior and making plays that the average player wouldn't, then you are likely to give up less hits and runs.

There is a reason why 3 hall of fame pitchers give much credit for their later career success to Andruw Jones.

And this is why FIP is useful. It helps to determine the effectiveness of the pitcher without having to account for defense, luck, ballpark, etc.

If Archer needs to re-establish his fastball, get back to pounding the zone with strikes, etc the Pirates are a great coaching fit. Searage does well with those projects, and NH likes that approach in his pitchers.

If you need to develop any other pitch, he should stay the frick away, because Searage is horrible at that See Cole, Morton, etc...they flourished once they got away from him.

DO. NOT. WANT.

That must mean the price tag for Archer is higher than what the Braves are comfortable with.

Sources: #Brewers, #Braves, #Pirates all strongly in mix for Archer, with #Dodgers and others potentially lurking. If bidding is indeed as furious as it sounds, the #Rays have played this exactly right, taking it to the last day, trying to extract maximum value.

Right now it feels like Archer won’t be moved until the final hour.

Reds make out like bandits

Pick up Harvey for free, pay pro rated contract, and then flip him for assets, and then possibly resign him in off season.
