Not really once you accept that trying to increase your odds for any single year is a poor way of going about things

As opposed to relying on prospects that more times than not, do not pan out

Fans overrate the frick out of prospects, especially those fans that follow their respective farms.

I'm not overrating prospects. I'm talking about getting rid of 6 years of super cheap production for about 3 WAR from Machado isnt the best use of that super cheap production

If the Dodgers trade for Machado, we sign him in December, and he says that the time spent in LA made his decision for him, then I will look back on a trade for him very positively. If that doesnt happen, we better win the WS. Which, as it is with every single team, has the odds completely stacked against us to do so

6 years of cheap control on a a guy that may never even be a good MLB player, if he is even lucky enough to make the league at all.

And even if those player all become 1 WAR a year utility players, the value for a rental trade just isnt there

we didnt see one of those last year

and if machado does go for medina or diaz. thats like, dudes between 45 and 50 which isnt even close to being fair value for him whatsoever. those are B level prospects. which is better than i thought they would get, but far from a sweeping declaration that front offices dont care about rentals

and the orioles are probably only be getting diaz from the dodgers by agreeing to take on salary to keep the dodgers under the tax

@JonHeyman
Manny Machado just stopped by, and he said he’s seeing the reports of Dodgers and thinks/assumes they’re right (tho he said he doesn’t know for sure). The Miami product who’s been an Orioles his whole career said: “It’ll be different. But different can be good.”

Willie Calhoun was in the top 50 at the end of the year just like Diaz will be this year

not fair value? wut? for 60 games worth, that is even value.

add in a guy like Lux, May or even Yadier and its a great trade for Balt

which is better than i thought they would get,

well yea, you said they wouldnt get value, and at one point you said they may not end up trading him at all. c'mon guy

calhoun was not in the top 50 until the middle of the year reports came out this year. diaz will be top 50 at the start of next year. diaz is top 50, calhoun was not

i said they would get a C+/B- fringe top 100 guy as the center piece. probably similar to where calhoun was when he got traded. which was around 75

yes. i made a comment about not being surprised by the complete and utter ridiculousness of the oriole front office. wow, im the first one to ever do that

Baseball Prospectus 43

there were a lot of people who had questions about the type of return the orioles were going to get. i was far from the only one. we were wrong. it happens

The Dodgers already have a stacked outfield. I don't know what the gripe is us about giving up the second best OF prospect in the system. The Cubs gave up Torres because he was being blocked by Russell and Baez and Torres was a much more heralded prospect than Diaz. Also, the last three teams that won the World Series made major in-season trades that helped propel them to win it all.

it has nothing to do with giving him up, and everything to do with giving him up for a player who you will probably only be getting 60 games out of. if machado resigns, great. the trade is completely worth it. if he doesnt? then its not

and i would argue that kansas city in 2015 was in one of the few positions that it actually made legitimate sense to go out and acquire a rental since that was the literal end of their run for the foreseeable future and the cubs in 2016 were a situation completely unique given their streak. verlander was not a rental

it once again needs to be said. the playoffs are a total and complete crap shoot
