Mookie probably one of the few, but it took a 60 game season with no fans in the stands for his snakebit manager with the worst luck in pitching decisions in the history of mankind to win one

Machado had to pan out so far. Padres are pretty much the Angels when it comes to bad contracts. Just off the top of my head Hosmer and Tatis

I get it that you think players deserve these big contracts and you don't mind signing them to lifetime contracts. And I hope your team gets its fill of them and make you happy.

i think some do. I usually would try to avoid long term deals but some players are worth them and not every single major deal crashes and burns

And i think judging an individual player by if their team won a world series is beyond idiotic

Call me an idiot

I want players that want to win the championship over achieving personal goals and wealth

If Trout doesn't make an effort to get on a team with goals before his career is over, he can be Joey Votto

Works out perfect for me. I don't want guys like that on the teams opposing my team for championships

To be fair the start isn’t typically the issue (unless it’s a Rendon or Strasburg type albatross). It’s how hard the fall is on the back end and how quickly it comes. If Machado has another MVP type year it will be fascinating to see if he opts out at 31. I would assume he does.

Yeah, I think the long term mega-deals that pan out are few and far between. I can and have listed here the many that didn't when prompted to do so. Just look at the Rangers last year.

I'd prefer higher yearly payouts with fewer years as a fan of my team. Of course the players want just the opposite and that's the rub.

There's a lot of interest in outfielder Mitch Haniger, and in some corners, an expectation that he'll get at least three years in a contract, in the $15m range annually.

The Boston #RedSox offered the same contract for Eflin, but he lives in nearby Orlando, so #Rays had home-field advantage

True. But I wasn't pointing the finger at them.

The Arod Texas deal would be seen as a success, even his follow up with the Yankees. The next Yankees deal would be a failure though as he was already way past 30. Same thing with Miguel Cabrera and the Tigers. First deal could be seen as a major success while second has been a failure. Even Justin Verlander and his deal he signed with the Tigers was a major success.
Seems people tend to forget about the ones that succeed because that is the expectation. We easily remember the colossal failures because they tend to put those teams in a bad situation.

I know someone brought up the Rangers with Semien and Seager. Semian was worth 5.9 WAR and Seager 4.0 WAR so even though they didn't live up to the expectations of people the provided value. According to metrics 1 WAR is worth 8 million according the Fangraphs. So those two combined to provide almost 80 million worth of value while costing 58 million.

I've done this before - someone posted the list of alleged successes on these huge long terms and I did some research and posted the failures....the latter list is much longer.

Most of the failures are old s hool as well, more recent history is more promising as teams have quit giving 32-33 year old players 10 year deals. The definition of success is different for everyone though so some may see a player as a success another may see it being a failure.

I don't think there's any way the Tatis and Lindor contracts work out for their respective teams. Early returns would say no even though they were both very young....just way too long even for guys that young in my view.

Harper - he's played up to the money the first 3 years of his and if they'd have won the WS it would be case closed now IMHO. But still 10 years left on his and he ain't a spring chicken anymore.

Milwaukee had a number of suitors for Kolten Wong and in the end got Jesse Winker and Abraham Toro. There were a number of three-team incarnations during talks, but ultimately wound up a Seattle-Milwaukee production. First on the scene with the agreement was @Ken_Rosenthal.
