Since the 2nd half of the 2016 season, the giants have been the worst team in MLB. Adding aging veterans on the decline with expensive contracts is not only NOT going to get them into the playoffs this season but also make their future years even more bleak. This is reminiscent of the Phillies and Tigers

It all depends on their pitching. A healthy Bum/Cueto will go a long ways.

Sources: The New York Yankees are working on a deal to acquire starting pitcher Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sides are talking, and while a final package has not come together, there is confidence. "A matter of when rather than if," one source said.

gonna be a huge swap of prospects if this happens.

yankees have always loved gerrit cole, and maybe they work a deal eventually. but still hearing of one big holdup: pirates want gleyber to headline package, yanks want frazier to headline it.

Man I would hate to include Adams I think that kid is going to be special. Hopefully they work out something with Frazier and other kids.

@therealjleyritz Feinsand is right on. Cole deal had been agreed on in principle at winter meetings. Just a matter of pieces. Cole side wants to get this done before New Year. Happy New Year Yankees Fans

Frazier, Abreu, and Estrada are my hope but probably going to include Adams or Sheffield.

I think Adams could be what Cole is, Yankees will have a lot of pitching with Cole

Severino, Cole, Tanaka, Gray, CC, Montgomery, Cessa. Which means the Yankees will have Montgomery, Cessa, and Warren as long relief 6th starter to give Tanaka/CC an extra days rest

Rumor on one of the Yankees boards I visit that if the Yankees get Cole they will look to move Gray to recoup some prospects

Dec. 22: Both Feinsand and Heyman throw some cold water on the talks with the Yankees, as Feinsand now hears that the advancement in talks last night may have been “overstated.” Heyman notes that there’s no positive momentum in talks between the two sides at this time.

...why wouldn’t they just keep Gray and the prospects they would trade for Cole. Makes absolutely zero sense and it sounds like BS

Possibly, Severino/Cole are viewed as aces, Tanaka is a 2, Gray is a 2, CC/Montgomery are 4/5 then you have Cessa/Heller/Warren who are all in that 3-5 range.

Cole will add 7.5M to the payroll and Yankees are about 20-25M under the 197M they need to be

The source said they believe righthander Chance Adams could be included, as well as third base prospect Miguel Andujar, which could broaden the deal with the Yankees looking for versatile infielder Josh Harrison possibly in return.

So Frazier, Adams, and Andujar....

Cole and Gray are pretty similar. I guess Cole has been a little more durable and consistent but they have the same amount of control and were very similar pitchers last season. Doing what you said would be making moves just for the sake of making moves which I doubt the Yankees do.

It seems like they legitimately want to beef up their rotation depth to win next year

Based on his post season usage they didn't seem enamored with him once they got a look at him closely.

As an Astros fan I was much higher on making a move for Cole than gray throughout the season fwiw.

Damn, cubs could've afforded that.

I guess we're rolling with Morrow.

Hard-Hit, Line-Drive, Walk Rate and Velocity all trending negatively. As we saw with Chapman last year and Melancon , these deals can become regrettable quickly.

Rockies have commited $106 million to 3 relievers this winter at a $35.33 million AAV which will probably be 25% of payroll
