Rob Manfred on defensive shifts and the possibility of an illegal-defense rule.

“We’re in the discussion-analysis phase on that topic, not the decision-phase.”

I hate the shifts but this is dumb and not the way to end them. You end them by paying players who beat the shift.

this is dumb

truly. players need to try and learn to not hit it in to the shift, that is the only way to get rid of it. for now it remains a smart defensive strategy.

I guess one thing to consider from a competitive standpoint is shifts disproportionately hurt left-handed hitters. So there is a competitive aspect to this that at least bears examination.

I hate the shift with a passion, but would never support a rule making it illegal to use one.

My opinion is a hitter needs to nut up and try to lay a bunt down rather than take a chance at what is already an unfavorable outcome by swinging his natural “pull” swing for a hit.

And double play depth disproportionately hurts players who hit ground balls. Yet no one cares about that shift because it’s been there for 100 years

If a professional baseball player can not put down his ego for one at bat and lay down a bunt the other way instead of trying to golf a ball into the right field seats he deserves to get out.

That comparison ignores the issue facing left-handed hitters that I merely said bears exploration. The setup of the diamond and the way players run around it is what impacts left-handers, not the shift itself.

Counter argument to that is that there's a lot more right-handed pitchers than lefties, which is an advantage for the left-hand batters.

See my post above. This isn't about advantages that are player-driven.

The game should be allowed to regulate Itself. If a hitter is too selfish to go oppo on an extreme shift, then why is the defensive team being held accountable?

or learn to hit to the opposite field. Baseball is a game of adjustments.

I say we keep the shift, but to even it out for lefties they run the bases in reverse order

AMEN!

To be clear, I hate the shift but do not favor legislating it out of the game, mostly because I don't trust the MLB to come up with a rule that makes any sense. I do think it is worth exploring what burdens shifting places on lefties.

But in all seriousness the fact this is being discussed is ridiculous and the first step to eliminating some of the new analytics/ strategy that is increasing popularity in baseball these days.

They can do whatever they want with shifting if they eliminate the DH.

In fact, I want to know how many of the "you need to adjust" or "you need to bunt" or "you need to learn to go the other way" posters support the fricking DH.
