Next you'll tell us that the MLB is more popular than the NFL because the MLB all star game gets better ratings than the pro bowl.

Except everyone knows football is king ratings wise.

The NBA had shite ratings in the regular season and the postseason. The Texas Rangers have had regional regular season ratings this year higher than national Nielsen ratings of some NBA playoff games.

Twitter and ESPN acts like the NBA the NBA is growing and will overtake the NFL in popularity and it couldn’t be further from the truth.

Do they?
I watch and follow both and I don’t feel like that at all
From who I follow and watch I feel like everyone knows NFL is king and will be for some time (that meaning unless football is just banned or some other tragedy)
If anything I feel like more people think CFB will catch it but they don’t get the northeast so that probably won’t happen

That said, how can you measure popularity?
Championship series ratings on a national level?
What do those look like?

Twitter pushes the NBA like no other. #NBAtwitter and r/NBA are two of the most delusional places on the internet. This is a very common thought in both places.

I don’t mind the NBA at all and I’m actually really looking forward to this season with no true superteam, but the interest in the league on-court activity is at an all-time low with most interest taking place in player drama and player movement.

The NBA all star game should be renamed the NBA glorified dunk contest. Nothing but a bunch of guys standing around on "defense" watching the offense do their acrobatics and flashy moves.

Such garbage appeals to the lowest common denominator.

It's no different than professional wrestling. Today's NBA is driven not by the competitive aspect but the drama and storylines and "beefs". Which is why I don't understand why so many balk at the idea that the NBA is at least scripted or rigged in some form.

Also, today's NBA fan is a fan of individual players, not teams.

Okay so Complex says it, but TV ratings don’t.

I think sports in general are getting that way
NBA leads by a mile but there’s less loyalty to the local team and a lot more bandwagonning and player following

Probably now days because it’s easier to watch every game

But even though I’m a millennial, I always chuckle when i meet a guy from SC who’s a lifelong Yankees or Red Sox fan

Yes.

The media and social media pumps up the NBA, but the ratings say it’s in a stagnant place if not worse in regards to actual viewership.

It’s essentially all a driven campaign to try and increase interest in the league due to the bloated TV contract with ESPN and Turner and the profit sharing in the CBA.

With chord cutters increasing daily the players and teams are looking at a drastic reduction in revenue to be shared following the contracts expiration. The league is aware of this and so is every person who is keeping up with it. ESPN is by far the most expensive channel in a cable package and it’s essentially mandatory. It costs so much because of ESPN’s rights for every sport/conference with MNF and the NBA being two of the biggest.

Come time to re-up nobody will pay the amount the NBA has now. Salaries will have to decrease and the league will shrink in regards to revenue. It’s a forgone conclusion at this point barring anything drastic and anyone thinking otherwise is blind or in denial.

The NBA is to young black men as to what celebrity tabloid gossip journalism is to white suburban moms.

The NBA is more popular on talk radio due to all of the drama with star players moving around. But if you compare the Ratings of the World Series to NBA Finals over the last few years, the NBA tops MLB but it is by a very small margin. And the 2017 and 2018 NBA Finals has Lebron going up again KD, Steph, and the Warriors. You would think the NBA Finals would have trounced the World Series, but it was very close especially last year with both averaging over 17 million viewers per game. In 2017, NBA Finals averaged a touch over 20 millions views per game while the World Series had over 19 million viewers per game. By comparison, the NFL Playoffs minus the Super Bowl averaged almost 30 million viewers per game. To act like either MLB or the NBA is closing in on the NFL is a joke.

Agreed
And to act like the NFL is even dying is a joke

I’m not to familiar with how TV ratings work, but couldn’t you say they’re decreasing across all sports?

Check out the World Series and NBA finals ratings from now to 25 years ago

Same with the NFL

It’s because the MLB all star game is the only real all star game.

Football and basketball are terrible fake yo yo yo rap fests.

The someone would like to compare the popularity of sports, College Football is far closer to MLB/NBA than those two are to the NBA.
