Guys, I know this sounds crazy but I have it on good account that Mike Shula is the number one target for HC of the Dolphins. I'm using a throw-away because this is still pretty fresh info, but this source is very well connected in south Florida and also told me about culpepper over brees, signing Suh and about the locker room issues before they recently came out.
It seems like management likes his development so far with the Panthers and the thought of another Shula dynasty appeals over more years of mediocrity and his not so glamorous college record.

More likely that they're trying to make Don Shula happy by getting his son's name out there.

Yes, please get him the hell away from Carolina and Cam Newton...unless that means promoting Ken Dorsey to offensive coordinator.

Shula's record at Alabama:

2003 (hired after spring training b/c of Mike Price stripper fiasco): 4-9
2004: 6-6
2005: 10-2 after a 9-0 start
2006: 6-7

Saban only improved that record by one game in 2007

He lost to Auburn every year, and Bama was dealing with heavy sanctions. His failure is a bit overblown

Have heard the same from a buddy that interned and now works in the Dolphins front office.

Running a HUGE risk with this one. I think there are bigger issues dealing with management rather than HC.

2003 They lost to NIU and Hawaii. Blew a 21 point lead against Arkansas and gave up a 4th and 20+ in OT vs Tennessee. Team was nowhere near that bad. If Franchione wasn't a pussy and stayed that team wins 8 games easy.

2004 - #1 Defense in the country and the worst offense imaginable. Had no hope managing a backup QB to beat anyone with a pulse after Croyle was injured in game. 6-6 was as bad as that team could have been.

2005 - 100% to blame for the Prothro injury. Was throwing deep to him up 31-3 in the 4th.

2006 - Couldn't win a tight game against anyone with a pulse. Had ample chances to beat someone among Arkansas Florida LSU Tennesse Auburn. Lost to a horrible Mississippi State team as well.

His failure IS NOT overblown.

Saban's first team the next year had moments you never saw from Shula. Win over Arkansas. Fought back from 10 down to send eventual #2 UGA to OT. Blowout win over East champ Tennessee. Took eventual NC LSU to the wire after going down 17-3 early. They did tank after that game because the emotional letdown losing it, but if you watched game by game the improvement was there.

I can't fathom Bama losing to Northern Illinois and Hawaii in the same year.

Yeah. The 7-6 team of 2007 showed more heart and promise than the 6-7 team of 2006. Yeah, the '07 team lost to UL-Monroe, but every single one of those games we lost was competitive - and we blew the breaks off of Tennessee, the eventual champion of the SEC East.

The 2003 season was arguably the worst of our ten year walk through the desert. But what people don't remember are the injuries that team suffered as the season progressed. The team that took '03 Oklahoma to the wire in Bryant-Denny was not the same team that got effed up by Hawaii in Honolulu.

In fact, Shula's entire tenure was plagued by key injuries that could not be overcome due to the lack of depth from probation. Be that as it may, however, Shula just didn't have the killer instinct to get us to the next level. He was too conservative and played not to lose way too many times. Despite the 7-6 record of his first year on the job, you could definitely tell a difference between the way Saban's '07 team conducted itself and the way Shula's '06 team conducted itself.

Pennington, Guillon got hurt too. We went down to 4th string walkon Brandon Avalos. He was completely inept. We had no qb.

Dave Rader deserves plenty of blame too. Let's not forget 1st and Darby

I agree with most everything you said. All I'm saying is his failure is a bit overblown. We weren't a complete dumpster fire.

Shula is a guy who would sink or swim based off his coordinator hires.

And unless he managed to fall arse backwards into some recently fired head coaches, not many proven guys would really jump on board with him...

That was 2006, when Darby was far from 100% healthy and our OL was nothing to write home about. In 2004 and 2005, 1st & Darby worked out quite well for us. People forget he had back-to-back 1,000+ yard seasons.

A little more info, Mike Shula definitely isn't a finished product by any means, but he really impressed Dolphins management after he interviewed post Alabama. They were reluctant then because it would have looked like they were trading Nick Saban for a recently fired Mike Shula. There is a feeling that there's enough distance now from that time and you won't find a guy that loves the Dolphins and Miami more than Mike.
