............ Oh stop it. When did I say that wasn't the case? In fact I'm pretty sure I said the exact reason guys that dunk contest appears to suck is because guys have to push the envelop to nearly impossible dunks because all the others have been done. That was logically imply that Jordan and Wilkins had a place in this. But you're changing your point over and over and over. You said that those dunks would win contests today because they're better. They wouldn't, and they're not. For their time, they were great, and they're still great with context, but they're relics in a modern dunk contest. That's what you don't get.

Jordan has always been a bitter dickhead the media in the 80s was more concerned with creating "Jordan" than it was reporting on how horrible of a person he was michael jordan would never have been "MJ" in today's media environment

You have got to be kidding me. You have absolutely no idea of what you are talking about. Jordan, Nike, and Gatorade created Jordan. The media was filled with assholes then too. Early in his career the media treated him much like Kobe early in his career calling him a ball hog.

do you really think the masses would buy his products if they knew he was a psychotic a-hole who happened to be a degenerate gambler? frick no. he would never have been as popular as he was if people knew the truth

the media was all about creating narratives and myths and not exposing reality. there also wasn't 24/7 media. could you imagine what TMZ would have done to michael "he who never slept" jordan?

we're not talking about that kind of coverage

we're talking about the media exposing michael for being a fricking psycho who had a terrible gambling problem

you see how iverson was treated? you see how kobe has been treated since colorado? that's how jordan would have been treated

People forget that by 82-83 Kareem was 35. Sure he was prodcutive, but we're not talking about prime Kareem with those Laker teams. And no one was guarding the skyhook anyway. The Heat would front Kareem all day long and just play ball denial like they do every other big man in the league.

The Heat are much better than some people on this board give them credit for. They're a historically great team. They've got 2 top 50 all time players and another Top 100-150 guy all in their primes. Plus 2 of the best three point shooters of all time in Ray Allen and Mike Miller. They have 4 38%+ 3pt shooters as role players, not including LeBron. So 5 all together. That's a great equalizer to those 80s and 90s teams.

Absolutely.

Pump the brakes. Check out their road record first. It's not exactly stellar this season.

lol. We're not talking about records here. We're talking about team construction.

Exactly. Team construction is evaluated by what is proven on the floor, not what COULD be.

Look at the Lakers.

This is such a terrible comparison.

Edit: The team has been to the last two NBA finals, appear to be on the way to a few more. And most of all they have 3 HoF locks playing together in their prime. If you have 3 HoFers playing together in their primes, you're meet my definition of all-time great teams.

Your argument depends more on the individual components of the whole rather than the whole itself.

I think my analogy is spot on, actually.

Kareem won one championship before Magic and that was 1971...he joined the Lakers in 75...won another in 80. So I really don't know what you're talking about.

n 1986/87, the league average pace was 100.8

in 2012/13, the league average pace is 91.8

that's 9 more possessions per 48 minutes, or about a 10% increase from today's game

Yes, but in 86-87, the average team scored 109.9 PPG.

In 2011-12, the average team scored 96.3 PPG. That's an increased of 13.6 PPG in those 9 extra possessions, and increase of FIFTEEN percent. So, pace does not fully explain the fact that offenses were actually more efficient in the 80s.

The reason is simple: the 3-point shot. Teams shoot it better now (349 to 301). But they jack it up a ton more. Attempts have gone from 388/team to 1213/team. That's more than three times as much on the worst shot in basketball. The increase in attempts does not counter the increase in shooting threes. Also, FG% has gone down by a lot.

I do think offenses were better in the 80s, mainly because they didn't keep jacking up the lowest percentage shot in the game. Modern teams are stupid, and rely on the three too much.

Did you just figure this out yesterday? This is old news and he is still the most popular sports figure for the last 25 years. He'll he was also a horrible GM and now owner. Iverson was an a-hole on the court and in press conferences though I actually found them pretty entertaining. And who cares if Jordan is a degenerate gambler the dude is rich and its not like he pissed all of his money away like most former pro athletes.

he would never have been as popular as he was if people knew the truth

Really? Oh no a rich dude that likes to throw his money around? Ray Lewis was involved in a double homicide and snitched on the other two guys but he was just celebrated as a hero.

The media protected Jordan probably more than any athlete ever.
