On WEEI, Mac Jones was asked if throwing a Hail Mary on the last play would have been too far. He said no, but that Bill Belichick had another play in mind.

That's not questioning, it's a statement of fact. He is able to throw it 50 yards, but they felt it wasn't the best option.

In the post game press conference I'm pretty sure Bill said he couldn't throw it that far.

So he could do it in college all day but all of a sudden can't do it in the NFL?

Yeah...Belichick's full of shite. In the 2020 Texas A&M game he launched a ball from his own 15-yard line and Metchie caught it perfectly in stride on the A&M 40-yard line. That's 45 yards through the air and it was delivered perfectly.

Wasnt this gonna be a 55 yard throw? And one that could be picked and returned?

Neither of these even went 50 yards in the air. Their LOS was their own 45, so it would have to be 60 in the air just to make it to the end zone.

So he does that in the last play yesterday and gets it to the 5 yard line, maybe?

Seems like Belichek knows what he was doing.

Throws it at his own goalline, Waddle catches it around the 50.

Throws it at his own 15, Metchie catches it around the 35. I know math is hard.

He threw it from the 3 and waddle caught it short of midfield. So, less than 50 yards.

Correct. Thats 45 yards. Once again, less than 50 yards.

Apparently it is for some. Considering he had to throw it 55 yards, at absolute minimum, whats your point?

How many Hail Mary plays have landed outside the end zone in a WR's hand before being ran in for a touchdown?

Also...that throw to Metchie would have landed on the 35-yard line if he hadn't been there to catch it. It was thrown from the 15-yard line. That's 50 yards, bruh.

Hail Marys when the QB can’t even get it to the end zone? Seems a bit redundant.

So he still comes up 5 yards short of the end zone? Awesome.

15 + 35 yards to the 50. Then from the 50 to the opponent’s 35 is 15. 35+15 = 50.

So a Hail Mary pass can only land in the end zone to be successful?

He didn’t catch it at the 35. He caught it at the 40.

You people are arguing about an extra couple of yards, that he doesn’t have, to get him to 50 when the throw yesterday had to be 55.

Both of those gifs were 40 yard passes

That being said I have no doubt he can throw 50 yards, 60 prob not

Hail Marys already have extremely low success rates, hence the double entendre with a literal prayer.

If you want to die on this ridiculous hill, go find some examples of them that were short of the end zone and worked.

The items in bold are only official if Rec/Birmingham dials up the refs on a review…

3 to 50
16 to opposing team’s 38

Both do not make it 50 yards in the air much less the 55 (from line of scrimmage) to 62 (from pocket) needed on last play to make throw to goal line.
