It's accepted that most coaches are complete pricks.
But Mangino took it to a whole new level, over the course of his career. He's a good coach, but he's such an awful person that no one is willing to put up with it.
That picture of him next to the Orange Bowl mascot is GOAT

Either that and be championship-caliber or enjoy going 1-11 every year and treated like a princess.
So your saying the only way a coach to be successful is to be an a-hole?

Go take a look at K State over the 60s-80's, the worst football program PERIOD ! What Bill Snyder did with them, not once but twice, is unbelievable. I would say that title goes to Snyder. Although I agree Mangino pulled off a miracle with that shite program at Kansas.
Snyder must have been desperate for a HC gig.

Sweet, if he loses another 125 pounds he will be down to half of his original weight!

Dude didn’t have to recruit. Just used his own gravitational pull to attract talent.

He has been eating other coaches.

Mark is a great coach but a piece of shite human being. How the hell kids would respect someone that fat is beyond me.

You have to know when to turn it on and when to turn it off.
The FB coach at my HS won for years, at least partially due to having D-I talent in some positions including a skill player who ended up in the Super Bowl. And despite that he still had rage issues which included breaking his hand punching a locker at halftime while the team was good. When that last player left and things regressed, he turned up the a-hole behavior to 11 and a team that had been to the playoffs for almost a decade straight fell to 3-7 and then went on an insane 60+ game losing streak that saw about 3-4 different coaches come in to try and fix the damage.
Eventually one of his assistants from that last great team got the job and took over, fixing everything, but it took years to undo the mess because they lost a ton of talent because the first coach was too much of an a-hole and it meant they had no way to retain or add new talent to the team because he refused to swallow his pride and try to recruit some athletes in the student body who weren’t playing fall sports.
The current coach is generally a nice guy but also knows when to use the a-hole behavior to make a point.
From Mangino’s perspective, he was able to keep winning as long as he kept bringing in talent (including shady-arse talent like Aqib Talib) and they could put up results on the field.
The second the results faltered, he would have lost the team and been unable to get them back because none of them liked him.
