"Report: SMU willing to pay Mack Brown $4 million a year?"

"Mack Brown made a lot of money while he was coaching at Texas, so odds are if you want to pry the 63-year old away from his cushy television gig and convince him to return to the sideline to rebuild your program, you're going to need to offer some coin.

And apparently SMU is willing to do just that.

In late September, after June Jones stepped down as SMU's coach, it was reported that some people at SMU were "intrigued" by the idea of bringing Brown to the school. Well, according to Dallas Morning News columnist Bill Nichols, that intrigue is worth about $32 million."

Horrible move for both parties (excluding the fact that Brown gets $4mil a year)

It's a small exception, isn't it?

Even if Mack is motivated enough to try and stick it to UT, he still won't be able to pull in the recruits to do so.

I think Mack's recruiting woes in the later UT years were due to effort. If he gets out there and grinds, I think he's an upgrade.

or he could do like June Jones and use the this job as one last big pay day and pretty much give 0 fricks.

if SMU wants to throw huge money at someone, use it towards an up and comer.

What happened to Mack is that he planned on, and told people, he was retiring after Colt graduated and he won his second Natty. That's why Muschamp was Head Coach In Waiting. When Colt got hurt and UT lost to Bama, Mack's plan of going out on top went up in smoke. He didn't want to go out like that. That wasn't the plan. So he came back even though he'd mentally checked out. That's pretty much impossible to do. Muschamp was pissed, of course, and left. Mack tried and failed to get himself back in gear. He'd neglected some things in the last couple of years running up to the final championship run because he knew he was leaving afterwords and didn't need to worry, but suddenly he WAS still coaching and wishing he'd prepared better. The end came because the mountain was mentally and emotionally too hard to climb after having already checked out.

At a new gig, a clean slate, hungry again... while Mack couldn't rake in top 5 classes at a school like SMU, he'd still steal a few from he big boys for sure.

I imagine the best that Mack could do at SMU is turn around the horrid recruiting situation much how Sherman did at A&M when he had to restore confidence w/Texas HS coaches post Fran.

If he is actually motivated and can get solid coordinators he could do some good there but I just don't think he can get them to a giant slayer status.

Also, if SMU is willing to toss around coin like that they should probably go for an up an comer like Chad Morris.

they'd be better off waiting for UF to fire Muschamp and get a guy who wants to prove he can actually coach

It would be a good retirement project for Mack. He should do it. There are worse places to be than Highland Park.

And if SMU can lure in Larry Brown, I think they could get Mack Brown

Not sure how true, but I read an article where his recruiting classes were not as good as their ranking. He would offer in their Jr year of HS, and these kids who did commit would keep their high rankings, even if they didn't pan out their Sr year. The article also said if you committed to Brown, he wouldn't take your scholly away, even if you sucked.

While there's *some* truth to that, it's mostly historical revisionism.

Those highly ranked kids Texas was landing were also wanted by everyone else. They had offers from A&M, OU, LSU, Alabama, OSU, USC, and chose Texas. So to accept that they were all a bunch of scrubs who just got inflated rankings for being UT commits, we'd also be saying that EVERY other big school around was wrong too. That's too big of a stretch. Were they somewhat overrated? Yeah, I think Ketch did overrate them to some degree, but overall they still had a shite ton of talent everyone else wanted and should've won more than they did.

Where Mack DID bomb HUGE in recruiting particularly near the end was at QB. That was a mega big contributor to his fall.

That, and the fact that he/his staff is/were terrible developers of talent. They became notorious within the NFL for producing soft-arse players that hadn't progressed much in terms of fundamentals.
