Yeah dude, for sure. This guy out here volunteering his time to hopefully help instill some good values in our youth, and doesn't know the rules. A realy travesty actully.

Always step off if someone is stealing and you still have the ball (the pitcher).

Start teaching it now. There should never be any confusion about coming set in a situation like that.

Are you learning the rules of baseball for the first time?

You mean the ever changing, increasingly complex rules of which balks are one of the most fluid? I guess I will have to cry ignorance.

Has to step off. If he did it's legal.

That's what makes baseball so fun and frustrating at the same time. I know umpires are human and they miss things but it's almost too easy to make a ruling to fit what they called instead of correcting the mistake. Subjectivity makes things interesting at least.

It was gone with the last Miller Highlife of the day. I just thought the situation was interesting.

Here's another wrinkle. I just started scouring the rule book and found this. When pitching from the stretch and the pitcher comes to a set position, they must come to a complete stop before delivering the ball. With the runner breaking as they were coming set, there was not enough time to come to that complete stop before the move was made.

The set rule only applies to a delivered pitch, I believe. If you step off while coming set you’re okay.

He stepped off, and thus becomes a regular fielder and can make any throw.

Nice. It was a pretty good game up to that point, for us at least. I don't expect the coach to say any different but it is what it is. Hopefully, all the kids will learn from it.

I do like Rivault and Livingston over Traction and Zachary. There's just something about playing on real grass and dirt that feels right.

This is only applicable for the actual pitch. You don't have to come set to step off or attempt a pickoff.

I bet you're the type of coach who gets thrown of a kids baseball game because they're arguing with the ump like its an MLB game

If not it's throwing to an unoccupied base which is illegal.

This isn’t right. The pitcher isn’t called for a balk when attempting a pickoff at 1st base if the runner decides to steal instead of returning to the base

If the runner is advancing to 2nd, it is considered as being occupied, and the pitcher can make the throw ahead of the runner.

If you paying that much for travel ball and your coach at 13U level doesn't know, fire him and get a new coach.
