Obviously this is assuming he does indeed retire.

Among players with 7+ years in league

Brady- 84,520 yards

Matt Ryan
- 59,735 yards
- 36 years old
- 269.1 yards per game
- Would need to play 92 more games at that rate (5.4 full seasons, age 41)

Matthew Stafford
- 49995 yards
- 33 years old
- 274.7 yards per game
- Would need to play 126 more games at that rate (7.3 full seasons, age 40)

Derek Carr
- 31,700 yards
- 30 years old
- 249.6 yards per game
- Would need to play 211.6 more games at that rate (12 full seasons, age 42)

Ryan is definitely slowing down. Stafford is probably the only one with a shot

I really thought Stafford was older. I also thought Ryan was the same age as Stafford.

Derek Carr having a chance is insane. I didnt remember him really being much until the last couple years

None of those guys have a chance.

Younger talent, like Mahomes, can be debated. But at the end of the day franchise QBs make so much money (from salary and endorsements) that I don't think they are going to hang around and endure the pain and hardship of a prolonged NFL career. Brady was just wired different. He got hooked on the Super Bowl juice young and became a full blown addict. I think modern QBs are going to trend more towards Andrew Luck.

All of them are guaranteed one additional game each year.

Brady did it with 16 game seasons.

Now 17 game seasons moving forward.

Just something to consider.

It would someone from the Mahomes, Allen Burrow Herbert group. They have an outside chance given the expanded schedule

I don’t include the younger guys because so much can happens. I bet one of those 4 isn’t even a starter in 6 years.

Burrow would have to pull a Brady and play multiple years more than those other guys to do it considering age and time served so far. That’s not likely being as he takes a beating and had a serious injury already.

Based on what? Career ending injury is the only thing that would lead to this being true.

It's going to be a long, long time, if ever, before someone plays long enough to threaten Brady's record. None of those group of three have enough years left to throw for 25k+ more yards. Hell, Derek Carr needs over 50k more yards. Not a chance in hell

Playing until 40 ain’t much anymore

Stafford has a chance to have the biggest legacy transformation ever for the point he is in his career

He is 11 seasons in, and he was thought of as a volume passer mediocre QB by the sports masses

He has a chance to now win potentially multiple Super Bowls and have the all time passing record, which would lead to him being likely talked about as top 10 all time. That unheard of to do that transformation this late in a career

Only Kurt Warner would be comparable if stafford pulls it off

With the 17th game being added, all those records are going down

I will say this. I specifically remember when Marino went over 60,000 yards and announced his retirement back in 2000. There was a debate as to whether that record would ever be broken. The consensus from the experts was that it probably would not and if it somehow was then it would take something amazing.

At the time Montana, Elway, Kelly, Boomer, Moon and Steve Young had recently retired and Aikman was on his way out too. The young QBs were struggling, even Manning. There were busts everywhere, guys like Jeff Garcia, Steve Buerlein, Rich Gannon and Elvis Grbac were leading the league in statistics. Fantasy owners were trying to talk themselves out of drafting Quincy Carter. And the best QB was an undrafted free agent who had been bagging groceries at a Piggly Wiggly after washing out of the Arena League.

That was the state of NFL QBs in 2000 when Marino walked away from his lofty records and Brady first walked into the Patriots training camp.

Fast forward 22 years and Marino's untouchable 60,000 yard barrier doesn't look so amazing. Old man Favre gunslinged his way past it seven years later and now we are very close to seeing it passed 9 more times in 10 years.

2013: Peyton Manning
2015: Drew Brees
2016: Tom Brady
2019: (Eli is benched first month of season with 57,000)
2020: Philip Rivers
2021: Ben Rothlisberger
2022: Matt Ryan (needs 500)
2023: Aaron Rodgers (needs 5000)
2024: Matt Stafford (needs 10,000)

And that's to say nothing of the new generation of young guns (Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, Herbert, etc) who have kicked it up another notch.

I know there are a lot of reasons (that I don't want to debate) but if the game can take a few big leaps forward in a short period of time, then it's not unreasonable to think the Brady's records might be broken sometime in the near future or at least in our lifetime.

other than Brady, who are all of these QBs playing into their 40s now?

P Manning - no
E Manning - no
P Rivers - no
B Roethlisburger - no
Brees - yes
Brady - yes

And Brees, as well as the others, have had precipitous declines in their later years. Brady is a unicorn playing into his 40s and still putting up numbers. To throw for 85000 yards, you would need to average 5000 passing yards for 17 seasons...or average 4500 yards for 19 seasons. Just starting in the NFL that many years is hard to do in and of itself, much less putting up numbers like that for that long. Brady has thrown for 23000 yards since turning 40. That's never going to be normal. The NFL would have to have extremely drastic changes, even more so than the Marino era to now, for 85000 yards to be a mark that so many QBs can hit

Brady, at age 44, threw for over 5000 yards. No one is ever touching his records imo.
