Longtime Ragin’ Cajun play by play guy Jay Walker was let go from ESPN 1420

As of now, he’s still employed by Learfield who owns the broadcasting rights for Cajuns athletics. I heard about this earlier today but just read that he posted it himself:
quote:
Today I was let go by Townsquare Media.
It was not a shock. In fact, just yesterday I told someone, "I don't know if I will have a job tomorrow."
As it turns out, I don't.
Now, I know the next question and let me explain.
Over the last two years, Learfield/IMG College has owned the broadcast rights for UL Sports. They control who the pbp voice is, not Townsquare. That having been said, I'm not sure they can pay me enough to just do that. I still have twin daughters about to turn 18 who I would like to see go to college. Retirement really isn't an option at this time.
So, we'll play things one day at a time. Maybe I'm around in September, maybe I'm not.
But this has been one hell of a ride, either way.
We have sparred on occasion, but we always have wanted the same thing, and that's the best for Louisiana Athletics.
For me, that will never change.

I thought schools also payed their broadcasters? UL should make him whole. Feel bad for Jay.

Our broadcasting rights belong to Learfield/IMG College. They pay the broadcast crew.

Maybe the air won't be so dead.
This is what happens when you're a prick.

So was he laid off because of the whole "no sports" thing or did he piss off someone at Learfield? Wasn't really explicit.

Louisiana at Lafayette, bitch

No use to pay money for something that nobody listens to.

Damn, this is big for the Lafayette area. I never cared for him anyway. I wonder if 103.7 picks him up.

He was probably laid off because advertising is down, he was likely highly paid relative to the market, and they can get someone cheaper to fill his spot.
A real tough and sh&&y thing to happen, especially at his age (which I assume is well into his 60s).

Sucks for anyone losing their job. With that being said Jay’s kind of a pompous douche. I think he’ll get hired back on once things get back to normal

As far as I know he still has his Learfield job. He just got laid off from his Townsquare Media job

Did Kevin Foote get let go too, he was the most entertaining on that station ?

That's what I got from what he said. I think the future of that may depend on what else he does. I'm also wondering how those contracts are structured, he may get paid if there are broadcasts.
I personally always like Jay, never really got the pompous thing some folks get of him. He does definitely have an opinion though. And I do find he is pretty fair in his assessments. I, for one, will miss Jay on 1420.

I did hear that Foote was being let go. I'd be shocked if 103.7 doesn't scoop up Foote right away. He's got a huge base that's been listening to and reading his stories for years.

Jay is a complete and utter a-hole, elitist, and puppet for administration. I'll never forget how much of a frickstick he was when Farmer was fricking up the baseball renovations. Literally went on air every day and lied to people to protect his little drinking buddy.
Hope he finds gainful employment, but I'm not going to pretend like he was this awesome guy.

Not close enough to the inner working to have seen that. I do get that he did couch UL Lafayette related things in the best possible light. Most play by play guys who cover sports as well do that, why wouldn't they. That is essentially their job.
I have no idea if he was an awesome guy, I just know I liked him on the air. People I know who I know him personally like him. I do not know him personally.

I’m not sure why they’re updating it again. Didn’t they just change the logo like 2 or 3 years ago?

6 years ago I believe. Looks like someone installed paint shop deluxe 95, picked the dumbest looking font, and put a sun in the B.
