Why? Catch started in the field of play.

I agree. Weird rule. You should have to land back in play IMO.
Just like catching a TD without getting feet in.

What about a foul ball caught in the dugout or over the wall into the stands?

Watch the video and then try and say that catch wasn't impressive. It was 12-15 yr olds too so he actually had to track the ball a decent ways then made an amazing play on it. Seriously. Just watch it and you will be impressed

That's the rule for cricket. Which is why we kicked the limeys out.

Did it land out of the park?

This isn't football...

There's no crossing the goal line or the imaginary plane to infinity.

The point is that a CATCH of a pop fly is an out , no matter how it is caught legally.

I feel like those catches shouldn't count if you fall over the fence. You should have to bring the ball back onto the field of play to be an out.

That's different because it's not a run-scoring play

Sorry posted a reply without seeing the replay.

Thought a poster was saying it crossed over the fence and therefore was a HR regardless of catch in the park.

Hasn't the rule always been, you can snag a HR away but only if you land back in the park? If you catch a ball, and you are out of the Park, the ball is out of the Park...but if you catch a ball out of the park but you land in the park...that's the body rule...the ball stays in the park.

Sorry I assumed the replay was some cool snag way over the fence but the guy stayed in the park...

Never heard of diving over the fence and that being an out.

I agree with the guy I responded to - after seeing the video - he was right - we all know that - it's baseball...if a ball is over the fence the only way it's an out is if someone catches it and brings it back into the field of play.

That's the long-standing baseball ethos, pathos, rule, code, etc.

You can't just jump over a fence like Evil Knievel and catch a ball down by the river and call it an out.

The ball doesn't have to stay in the park...but the person catching the ball, has to stay in the park.

I'm okay with the rule. He caught it without any extra aid. Leave your feet in fair play then it's cool. Just like a faul ball.
