Actually it was three flights and he was suspended six games

which likely was true - without the structure of the football program, he likely would've ended up in jail... time proved that correct

I'm pretty sure Lawrence Phillips was suspended for the remainder of the season. The controversy erupted when his suspension suddenly came to an end right before the national championship game against Florida.
Osborne reinstated him with a couple games left in the season, although he wasn't the starter. The controversy was when he was named starter vs. Florida. The truth was that Osborne was hoping Lawrence would have a big game and re-spark his draft status. It worked, because after the game he shot up the draft boards and was considered by many to be the best player in the draft. Osborne told him to go pro, even though he easily could've advised him to come back for another season. Had he done so, Nebraska likely would've been in the national title game again the following year, and could've won 4 national championships in a row.
