I know I know most of us here don’t care about the LPGA.

Still, it’s always worth noting when one person, group, country, etc... dominates a particular sport.

Currently they are playing one of their majors and the top 5 on the leaderboard are all Korean.

Does the country just put more resources into development of female golfers ala the US and Women’s Soccer?

Is there a different reason?

The best American is I guess Lexi Thompson? And she’s not even that good compared to like a dozen of the Korean girls

I knew that would be the first response and that’s fine.

But as I said when one group totally dominates a sport it’s always interesting to try and learn why.

They are as dominate at women’s golf as America is at men’s basketball

They have the personality of a fence post. Very boring.

I would venture to guess that they are more outgoing when they are in their home countries, but yeah they aren’t exactly the most exciting girls to watch play I agree.

Still, why is it that they are so much better than everybody else?

“Honestly, I think they have a better developmental program for juniors,” Korda told reporters on Tuesday. “The Korean girls are dominating. They have a national team. Golf is an expensive sport. They pay for that. They travel to different countries and play a bunch.”
Speaking of the Korean players’ advantages, she added, “So in Korea, I know that they have to play two years on the Korean LPGA before they even come to the States. So they’ve already been a pro before they come to our tour. So as you call them rookies, they’ve won, you know, like 10 times professionally. And that’s a huge advantage coming here whereas if you see all of the American girls they might have played a year on the Symetra Tour or they’re fresh rookies

Yes. This is the only answer. Look at the US in women’s basketball, soccer, and softball.

These sports MUST have college teams due to scholarship limits from title IX. I’m not sure this his the case in other countries.

Makes sense, the country invest in their programs and they become good. It’s crazy how much of a difference a particular governing body of a sport can make in a country.

If I was in charge of national Athletics in a small country I would definitely try to focus on one sport

I’ve played golf thousands of times in the past 20 years and I can’t recall very many instances of a dad or mom playing with their daughter under the age of 12. In the realm of sports, some require elite athleticism (football) and some require elite skill (golf). Some like soccer and basketball require both. But golf is like 98% skill. The sooner you start it the better chance you have of being elite. There just aren’t enough people here in the US with that mentality of pushing out daughters to be the best at something at all costs. Asians (rich overseas and 1st gen American) have been this way for years. They pick activities that are less oriented in talent or natural ability and more oriented in skill. They also tend to focus on non team oriented activities. This is why tennis, golf, classical instruments, and shite like spelling Bees are where they focus. I suspect that Korea, who has been a rapidly growing power with tons of wealth generated over the past several decades has had a big expansion in golf as a result and combined with the aforementioned skill sport focus you get tons of female golfers. The reason the Korean men aren’t dominating is because there are lots more dads in Europe, former British empire countries and the USA who are pushing their sons to be golfers do the competition is much greater.

Good question actually - would love details but presume they have a well funded and organized state sponsored development program.

They’ve ruined the entire tour . Nobody cares what they shoot the major sponsors want the American girls to win. 90% of the events are here and people quit going when Asians took over .
