I still can't get my mind right over this

The families and friends. So much lost and so many tears that will never fully dry.

Wish I could still fit my old Kobe’s :(... I loved his shoes. I eventually outgrew them. Going buy some more just to honor Kobe.

I don’t know why I keep watching this ESPN coverage. I’ve gotten increasingly more sad throughout the day and this isn’t helping.

LINK

That’s a link the helicopters flight plan and ATC communications up to the crash. Doesn’t seem they reported any issues.

I don't get why guys are overreacting to his comment, unless he made more than 1 "I can lose my job comment"

All he said was, "I could lose my job for saying this but I don't think they should be playing tonight."

Me neither but it seems the guy clipped a hill cause of the fog and went screaming into the ground

Seems he was supposed to ascend into the clouds then get help from ATC

Just insane

I didn’t look but listening to their radio communication you hear them talking special vfr. Basically ifr is flying the airplane in the clouds, which requires adhering to instrument flight rules, hence the name. Vfr is visual flight rules. In general ifr you’re with ATC so they can keep airplanes from hitting each other, that goes back to the 1960s.

There are cloud and/or visibility requirements to be vfr, if the weather is worse it’s ifr requiring you’re on a flight plan and with ATC. Special vfr is a carve out, helicopters like to use it. Weather is below vfr but still vfr enough to get by in a slow helicopter.

They're saying the pilot was likely inexperienced or undertrained and reacted exactly how you shouldn't react. Also talk of the pilot possibly being a bit reckless considering the conditions.

r/Flying

He was doing what’s called a Special VFR Flight Plan. Basically the weather was borderline unflyable without using the instruments in the cockpit only. It’s not hotdogging but on a day like today it’s not the best idea either. Of course it could be mechanical failure for all we know and nothing to do with weather.
