My son is starting 5th grade, he’ll repeat it next year.
Reason is maturity. He would graduate high school at 17yrs old if we don’t hold him back.
Physical maturity for sports is a bonus.

It should be pretty simple. If your child is born from September to April/early May he should graduate high school at 18 years old. The decision whether to hold back is really only for kids with June, July, or August (and possibly late May) birthdays and should be handled on an individual basis depending on how they perform academically and their maturity level.

yea so many of the comments of....where in texas did that kid come from
yet last years starting lineup was 90% of the kids that played in the 12u little league regionals together and the other 10% were kids that were a year older.
Glenn makes no secret that he encourages every kid to be held back once. no matter what. he will explain why in detail if you ask him and 99% of the things he mentions will have nothing to do with baseball
its funny though people bitch about barbe, but Glenn consistently puts an awesome product on the field...holds bible study before and after games, before practice etc...had a preacher and a priest come bless and talk to the team before games...and over 90% of his kids graduate with a 3.5 or above gpa
yet he is considered the bad guy because he dominates.

Never underestimate the power of stupidity..

Funny, because playing ‘up a year’ in select sports has always been the badge of honor…playing down one year seems insulting if you’re really good.

You’ve hit upon the conflict of individual development against team success
Some kids need that team success to secure opportunities at the next level

as usual you dont understand things involving sports
1) you play up and its a badge of honor in select sports because it gets you playing better competition which prepares you more for High school
2) you play down in high school so you have another year of development. specifically another year of lifting and velo/exit velo training so that you are more advanced than your peers.

If your good enough you shouldn’t have to be held back

Newsflash. It’s not just for sports. Boys typically mature slower than girls so giving them an extra year helps with that. The wife and I literally asked everyone we knew that had older kids about their experiences on this subject. NOT ONE PERSON SAID THEY REGRETTED HOLDING THEIR KID BACK. Many said that they wished they had.
If you have a son that is born in the summer time, I would strongly recommend that you “consider” starting school late if you have the means to do so.

One of the private schools in my area is notorious for it. Embarrassing John Curtis?
nah Curtis kids just can’t read so they need to be held back.

Curtis may be “notorious” for doing it but the dirty little secret is that the high end private schools recommend it and in some cases even require it if you are born in the summer months.

I think this is different than just holding those kids on the fringe of 2 classes back
you’re kid is way better off being the oldest than youngest kid in their grade.
my wife just sent me an article that shows the kids who go ahead as the youngest are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than the kids who are held back.
my son is right in that window.

Easy decision bud. Mine was the same way, was told we had to medicate so he could handle school bc of his hyperactivity. Turns out he just needed to grow up some.

Holding kids back doesn’t automatically make them better at school…but like you’re saying, if it’s predominantly a maturity issue it’ll buy critical time.
My son’s issues are a bit deeper…but you have to take the good with the bad.

If you aren't a retard being a year older than the average person in your class should help physically, academically and socially so why not?
