The chances of a guy getting hurt so bad he falls out of the first round let alone the draft entirely are practical nil.
and yet they are higher than simply not playing in the bowl

Sure there is, but one meaningless bowl game ain't it. That's not worth risking millions of dollars.

What does this even mean? How are you going to force a player to play once a bowl bid is given?

He’s expected to be a 1st round pick. I don’t love it, but I get sitting out. It could make a multi-million dollar difference if you get hurt.

I don't know what it says about a qb to sit out a bowl game. Don't think i like it.

You're a fan. You're not Kenny Pickett or a 1st round QB prospect. Why are you worried about someone else's money? As a fan, you just want to watch the game with the best players. Youre making a excuse for money when you're not getting any of it.

Right. You’re not Kenny Pickett. Put yourself in his shoes for half a second and it makes a little bit more sense.

How do you know he worked his arse off for it? There’s a list of players a mile long that got by just on their talent alone in college football

You think the guy that went to Pitt for football coasted on talent his whole life?

Ok

I saw how Pittsburgh’s backup was injured during the bowl game and will have surgery.

Oh get out of here.

There is definitely more to life than money.

But he 100% worked his arse off for it.
And he 100% has it(barring a wreck or something tragic) if he sits this game out.

Money is extremely important.

Idk what else to say.

yes in his shoes I would look at the NFL and say there are zero successful QBs who bowl quit

Players would have until a certain date to declare to opt out. Seems pretty simple. That way bowls could send out invitations accordingly.
Bowls would have the option to fine schools for breach of contract if players opt out after accepting bowl invitation.
It isn't fair for the bowls to invite teams and then have that team's star player(s) opt out of the game.

yes that's the whole point if it was actually helpful to quit bowl games it wouldn'thave randomly started happening 5 years ago.

The bowl games are supa dupa risky durrrrp narrative has zero merit and isn't supported by any factual information. It's just a dumbass trend that has caught on

I don't like his sitting out and he should not have travelled with the team. If you are going to quit then do the damn thin right and leave.

All of this.

Would I like to see a Heisman finalist finish off the best season his program has had in decades? Yep. Do I understand why he chose not to? Yep.

However, having Pickett in the coaches booth with a headset on would bother me as a teammate. Thanks for a great season, and good luck in the NFL, but you voluntarily left. We don't need you here.

Jokes on him, he probably would have put up 500 yards on MSU's putrid pass defense and improved his draft status more than he would have by not playing.

I could unpack this but that would have to be on the Poli board and probably piss off the majority there. It's an ironic statement...

I dig a quick Google search. Will Grier, played at West Virginia, sat out his bowl game to prepare for the draft. This was the 2018 season. So he's not the first major QB to do it an don't the last.
It's not going to hurt your draft stock one bit. Especially nowadays. If you're good enough to make it into the NFL and play then skipping a meaningless bowl game isn't going to hurt you. You either have what it take on the field or you don't.
