Kaepernick: How can I celebrate Independence Day when my ancestors were stripped of theirs

In an Independence Day message, NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick questioned the value the Fourth of July holds for black Americans, since the United States was founded on the backs of African-American slaves.
“How can we truly celebrate independence on a day that intentionally robbed our ancestors of theirs?” Kaepernick wrote on Twitter.
He instead touted the liberating effects of a recent visit to what appeared to be Ghana.

He and his big mouth will never put on an NFL uniform again if he doesn't shut the hell up about his politics. Even if he does, he damn well may never play again. Good riddance.

Yeh but he's achieved his ultimate goal: Social Just Warrior Supreme

Does this moron think the USA is the only place where slavery existed? Or the only place where blacks were enslaved? Hell, slavery STILL exists in Africa. The article mentions Ghana. Would he rather be living in Ghana right now? The average annual salary in Ghana is a little over $8,000 a year. I checked. CK, I'd rather you just say, God bless the USA, freest nation on earth.

Slavery still exists here, for that matter.

He should celebrate the country whose system allowed his dumbass to become a multi-millionaire.

Saying he can't celebrate independence day is a slap in the face to every African American who gave their lives in the Revolutionary War so that he can play professional football F

the owners never shut the hell up about their politics either. I wish they would stick to sports as well, except they use their little media plugs and their $$$ (political donates -- SC ruled that $$ = free speech) to tell us all we need to know,

Gotta give it up to him. He's all in. Fight the power!

Is it? Those African Americans needed fighting just to be enslaved right again. How is it slap in the face to them? Or are you just projecting how you think they should feel?
July 4th is a historical holiday. We remember the battles and the triumphs of this country on that day and what it has given us. To ask AA to basically just forget the parts of that history that you don't want to deal with is un-american and disrespectful.
They, along with Native Americans, fought their tails off for years to only to treated as worse then dogs. So yeah, for many of them, July 4th might just be an eye roll, or questionable holiday. They probably can't, won't, or never will celebrate the fourth like some of us will and thats not a problem. Different americans have different american experiences

Hes made a lot of money, and if he's doing what he loves, more power too him. He doesn't need to destroy his body any more for kids game. I hope he gets another chance...but historically...I can almost guarantee y'all that this will not bode well for the league.
It will be a black mark on the league...and I can't be shocked that they owners chose this course of action if we consider how they have conducted collective bargaining agreements, conduct punishments, drug policies, opioid abuse, concussion settlements, injury settlements, player pensions, contract stipulations, media coverage, player health and safety, etc...
It is the WORST professional sports league when it comes to employee empowerment. Shield over everything huh? Slow to innovate, and only changes and adapts when force to. Bad business model and bad leadership. Sure it rakes in billions in revenue...but its affinity to hide and disclose, rather than be transparent and evolve is a recipe for a huge fall. Its hallmarked all over the league. History won't be kind on the league if they really have close the door on Kaepernick.

1. You keep saying them I'm black.
2. It's no different than World War II African Americans gave their lives then and had to come back to a country that we still segregated where they still couldn't vote and where women weren't paid or treated as equals I have said on more than one occasion that I had a chance to sign up for the Air Force and turned it down because I refuse to fight for a country they can't take care of his own citizens. But someone paid the ultimate price so we can sit here and have this conversation that we're having now some of those people were African Americans and by saying that you can't celebrate it is a slap in the face. People who died so that you can

Lost in all of this is that he is completely distorted the word independence and lost its proper context
What he's actually referring to as far as Independence is really Juneteenth where slaves were free
The 4th of July is not about personal freedom it's about freedom from tyranny, taxation without representation and the end of a monarchy era it's about the freedom we have is a country to decide ironically enough if who is and is not considered to be free in our country that's something that we as Americans decided ourselves and that in itself is freedom

I can't even remotely take him seriously when he cries about black oppression knowing it took a white couple to step up and adopt him when his black family abandoned him.

Well at this point, he is "all in". No need to back down for him. Just continue his little tirade until "something" at some point goes good for him. Of course he will be totally broke, out of a career and have lost every little ounce of respect that anyone ever had for him at that point but it is petty little eyes, it will be some kind of win
Its hard to watch someone totally crumble like that. But In his case, people are enjoying it
Keep on keeping on Kap. The only person you are hurting is yourself

The sad thing is he'll just become your next Jesse Jackson type, with his pockets getting filled by capitalizing on the actual plights facing the African American community instead of actively trying to address them.
