I don't think he's getting a pass. I just think people don't think highly enough of him to expect better.

This statement was made abundantly clear on Sun afternoon. That being said, someone with any kind of situational awareness who have known to stay in bounds if it was clear he wasnt going to get the 1st. Most HS QBs would know that. Plus Harbough prob reminded him of that right before the play.

You understand that right?
Remember when we ran the ball right before calling the timeout?

I always wonder how coaches are allowed to get away with arse-clownery like this, but now I know why. People like you are not only not bright enough to realize how stupid that timeout was but actually go as far as to praise Payton for it.
That timeout saved exactly 1 second at the cost of a timeout. The next play was an incomplete pass so the clock would have stopped anyway. The 2 minute warning was not used to stop the clock.
Jesus Christ, I hope you were being sarcastic with your post although I really just don't think you were.

That plus the timeout at 2:01 really saved the saints some time on the clock.
IIRC that was prior to Hartley's kick to tie it and I think he took the TO to save some time on the back side of the 2 minute warning in case of a missed kick.

Oh wow.

And this is why this arse-clownery will continue. You all truly don't understand that his incompetence cost us a timeout.
To entertain your ignorance, what exactly is the logic behind that timeout?

This drive was basically why the Saints won the game.
San Francisco 49ers at 2:06 SF NO
1st and 10 at SF 20 (Shotgun) C.Kaepernick sacked at SF 11 for -9 yards (J.Galette).
Timeout #2 by NO at 02:01.
2nd and 19 at SF 11 (Shotgun) C.Kaepernick pass incomplete short right.
3rd and 19 at SF 11 (Shotgun) C.Kaepernick scrambles left end pushed ob at SF 27 for 16 yards (C.Carr).
4th and 3 at SF 27 A.Lee punts 48 yards to NO 25, Center-K.McDermott, fair catch by D.Sproles. PENALTY on SF-K.Osgood, Fair Catch Interference, 15 yards, enforced at NO 25.
DRIVE TOTALS: SF 20, NO 20, 3 plays, 7 yards, 0:18 elapsed

Gore's stone hands did more to cost them the game than anything IMO.

It's amazing how all the broadcasters and analysts realize it was great, but you know the truth.

Props to the San Diego Chargers for bailing out Ryan Tannehill, who ran out of bounds on 3rd down when the Chargers had one timeout left and less than 2:20 remaining in the game.

Serious question. Why would you call a timeout at the 2:01 mark?
Posted on 11/18/13 at 3:11 pm to TheSexecutioner

If Kaep hadn't run out of bounds, we wouldn't have had any timeouts left on our final drive because of Payton's illogical decision to call a timeout at 2:01.
You take the timeout at 2:01 because it makes it extremely difficult for 49ers to run clock backed up on 2nd and 19.
Let's say you let the clock go to the 2:00 warning. 49ers run the ball coming out of it, force you to take a timeout there, and then run the ball again on 3rd down.
The timeout before the 2 minute warning basically makes the 49ers throw the ball, because running the ball accomplishes nothing in that situation. Basically enticed the 49ers to be too aggressive deep in their territory and it paid off.

That was a ballsy TO by Payton. Trusting his D to make a stop.

GTFO with sound logic and reason.

Because coaches can predict incomplete passes?

Got it.
edit: Wait, by calling the timeout, the clock was going to stop on the next play no matter what since it was the 2 minute warning. They could still run the ball.
