ND and Bama are on equal footing in 2026: both have coaches that have made the NCG and lost (although DeBoer’s wasn’t with Bama) and neither has any players who have won a championship at the program.

Typically history dictates what you do. I realize that Indiana kinda disproves that but they disprove all history before them.

Until UGA won in 2021, they hadn’t won since 1980.

Clemson had a drought of 1981-2016.

Before 2023, Michigan had a split title with Nebraska in 1997, and otherwise hadn’t won since 1948.

Before 2005, Texas hadn’t won since 1970. They haven’t won since. But no one would be shocked if they win this year.

Oklahoma hasn’t won since 2000, but I don’t think people will be shocked if/when they win their next one.

OSU had a 34-yr drought between 1968 and 2002.

LSU had a 45-yr drought between 1958 and 2003.

Bama’s drought time-wise wasn’t particularly long between 1992 and 2009, but there were a lot of bad seasons / a few bad coaches between Stallings and Saban.

There are plenty of examples.

See how ridiculous your premise is?

Prior to last season, Indiana has never won a NC. They were considered as one of the all time worst programs.

Or, on the other hand, Nebraska's won quite a few championships. 5 I believe. How are they slated to play out in 2026?

The "logic" behind "it's not 1988 anymore" is flawed.

Yet none of those are really questioned because those conferences tend to have the best teams. ND has struggled to get over the hump at any point in the last 30 years. And they have no conference to point at and go well they are the best team in the big ten / SEC.

Do you think Freeman is a good coach?

Or is you’re optimism rooted in y’all finally (lmao) being able to pay players

Texas was in the Big 12 in 2005, which was basically a 2-man show after Nebraska fell off post-2001. Kansas State would dabble a bit (and TCU after joining was/is an occasional player, but that was well after 2005) but Texas ended their 35-year drought when their conference was essentially just them and Oklahoma.

Clemson’s in the ACC. They had absolutely no intra-conference competition in the mid-late 2010s. But they still ended their 35-year drought in 2016 and won an additional title in 2018. (Ironically, the only year ND was in the ACC was 2020 due to Covid and ended up making the ACCCG against Clemson.)

Along those lines, USC was an elite program in the 2000s, even though the Pac 10 was weak. (They also similarly had a drought from 1978 until 03/04, and likewise remain in a drought since.) Being in the PAC 10 didn’t prevent them from winning the 2004 NC.

Yore correct that ND can’t “point” to anything conference-wise, but then that’s like saying there’s absolutely no data / nothing at all that ND can be evaluated on except just winning the national championship? There’s still plenty of games/data that the team/program can still be evaluated on. That data can be used to conclude ND should probably be considered one of the 7/8 favorites (Georgia, IU, Miami, ND, Oregon, Ohio St, Texas, [and maybe Texas Tech although prob not now with the Sorsby news]).

Both?

I think Freeman is a great coach. I also think ND’s roster talent is better than it’s ever been since the early 90s, and it looks like given how recruiting / administrative buy-in (literally and figuratively…) is going, that will continue.

ND is chicken$hit not to join a conference when they can make money NOT joining one? Some of you are flat out morons.

ND hasn’t won a Natty in forever, yet TV execs still throw money at them like they are printing it. ND co tells its own fate season to season while you guys are on this very board whining about Sankey. It’s just too funny. ND will win one soon enough and then like after UGA won it all the memes will have to disappear.

I can’t wait for future generations to put big ole asterisks next to all the non-playoff titles. Most of us may be dead but it will still be funny.

Neutered Lame wouldn't beat Texas, UGA, A&M, Bama, LSU and Ole Miss if they played them.

BYU, Miami and SMU with the usual cupcakes for a schedule. I hope they lose twice and get left out of the playoff again for their LGBTQ schedule.

So of those 3 based off what i can find only USC had a weaker SOS(40-50s). But even that is ~30 spots higher than 2024 ND.(70-80s). Notre Dames schedule this year is preseason 66.

The whole basis of this thread is built on the fact that when Notre Dame plays a stronger schedule they tend to have multiple losses. And when they play the types of schedules they are known for they tend to get bullied once they play teams that have the same amount of time to prepare for a single game.

ND is a relic of a program. Its not 1977 anymore and even with extremely favorable treatment you still haven't been able to win a national championship in 38 years. I'd be embarrassed and lashing out too if that were my school

@Ronricks, what program do you think is on a better trajectory, ND with Freeman or Bama with DeBoer?

Let’s compare since Kalen took over…

Freeman vs Big 10: 6-1 86%
Freeman vs SEC: 3-1 75%
Freeman vs ACC: 9-1 90%
Freeman in CFP: 3-1 75%
Recruiting: After a decade of not cracking the top 10, Freeman is putting together his second top 3 class in a row

DeBoer vs Big 10: 2-2 50%
DeBoer vs SEC: 13-5 72%
DeBoer vs ACC: 0-1 0%
DeBoer in CFP: 1-1 50% (35 point loss)
Recruiting: After over a decade of being in the top 3, DeBoer slipped in #6 in ’26 and outside the top 30 in ‘27

Do you have a link to that? I find it extremely hard to believe that (without factoring in the postseason as part of the calculation, just regular season) either of Clemson's 2016 or 2018 schedules, or either of USC's 2003 or 2004 schedules were that far off from ND's. Regardless though, as I've mentioned, the SOS itself isn't an argument about whether a team is good or bad. It can be used to determine "resume" or "most deserving" but the Seahawks are the Seahawks regardless of schedule, and UMass is UMass regardless of schedule.

One of my main points is that I don't care about "tend to" because that "tends to" brings in data from coaches and players that are no longer around. I care about the past 3 seasons or so.

ND lost once in 2024 (inexplicably, still absolutely bizarre and I can't defend it) in the regular season. ND did lose twice last year. They lost by 3 on the road to the national runner-ups (who beat A&M on the road, beat OSU by 10 on an neutral field and beat Ole Miss on a neutral field). They also lost by 1 point to A&M (who finished 11-1 in the SEC). I think those results (in conjunction with ND's performance in the other 10 games, and yes, most of them were not great opponents...) makes it reasonable to say ND is a title favorite (when compared to other teams across the country).

I would again point to the 2024 CFP in which ND went 3-1 against top-10 teams in 4 consecutive games in the postseason. I've gone into more explicit details numerous times in this thread so nothing against you or your argument, but most of my points are already in posts in this thread, not gonna type them out again haha.

Nope, sorry, you can't use that because of sample size / time constraints. Have to evaluate ND and Bama as programs factoring in everything since 2008, when the current players were in preschool, Freeman was still a player at Ohio State and DeBoer was coaching at Sioux Falls. Those are the rules of this thread.

Nope, when I cited Freeman was 3-1 against the SEC in the past two years and 4-1 against the SEC total, you said that's not relevant because I constrained time to only Freeman's tenure at ND, and it's not a large enough sample size. Power ratings aren't good enough for you, recent ND/SEC playoff results aren't good enough for you, recent ND vs SEC record isn't good enough for you... You've (STILL) yet to describe what an adequate sample size is, what relevant data should be considered, how long "modern history" extends to, etc., when I've asked you to do so three separate times.

This will be the last time I address you in this thread. I would add the caveat that I would address you again if you actually make a substantive post. You clearly don't want to or can't (or, probably, both), so I'm going to stick to talking football with the grown-ups now. Bye.

P.S.: Your perpetual downvoting of every single post of mine and upvoting every single one of your own posts in this thread is one of the most pathetic things I've ever seen on here.

Fake news again, you have a habit of misquoting and twisting literally everything, not just my post to produce your delusional takes. All I did was give a large enough sample size to create a regular season record for them which sent you into a fit where you just started using double standards, hypocritical statements and selective facts to bypass anything you didn’t agree with. You’re still doing it with other posters using false statements you invented to prop up your silly nonsense.

The basis of the thread was that ND would struggle to run a Big Ten or SEC Schedule. Almost all proof we have shows that to be true

They beat an Indiana team that everybody knows was good but wasnt quite there. A Georgia team with a QB making his first career start and a Penn State team that lost to the best 2 teams on their schedule.
