UCLA/Wooden would NEVER dominate in ACC in the 60's/70's:
In 1974 Maryland (23-5) and North Carolina (22-5) were both ranked in the last top 10 pre-tournament poll, yet they both stayed home from the post-season after finishing in a second-place tie behind eventual national champion N.C. State who beat UCLA in championship game.
The ACC was so loaded that year that three of the top teams in the late February AP rankings were in the top five (N.C. State first, Maryland fourth and North Carolina fifth).

You have one year as evidence? Are you serious?
1964 - UCLA beats Duke
1965 - NC State doesnt make the Final 4
1966 - Texas Western wins it, UCLA misses tourn.
1967 - North Carolina loses to Dayton
1968 - UCLA beats UNC in the Finals
1969 - North Carolina loses out on facing UCLA after choking in the FF
1970 - NC St chokes after receiving a first round bye and UCLA wins it all
1971 - South Carolina gets a first round bye and loses their first game
1972 - UNC again loses in the FF, UCLA wins it all
1973 - Maryland loses in the Elite 8, UCLA wins it all
1974 - UCLA does indeed lose to an ACC school and David Thompson in the Final 4
1975 - North Carolina loses in the round of 16, UCLA wins it all
About the only thing this shows is that the most of those teams could have played in the ACC and it would have been a crapshoot.
Except a John Wooden coached team.

RIP Coach Wooden
I still say that if anyone hasnt read his book on the pyramid of success you should read it regardless if you are a sports fan or not.
Greatest college basketball coach in NCAA history sorry Coaches K and Knight.

hard to argue against phil jackson. in this day and age with free agency and having to baby players so much, to win 10 titles is amazing. i know i know, he had some of the best players ever in MJ, kobe and shaq. but how many titles did those players win W/O the zen master

Holy crap, bug embraces the dark side.
FWIW, Wooden was a great man. Met him once at a charity game at Pauley. Read his book, too. Great outlook on life.
As a rival, he was tough but always gracious.
Fight On, JW.

some famous John Wooden quotes:
LINK
My favorites:
You can't let praise or criticism get to you. It's a weakness to get caught up in either one."
"Winning takes talent, to repeat takes character."
If you're not making mistakes, then you're not doing anything. I'm positive that a doer makes mistakes."
"Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be."
Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do."
"It's what you learn after you know it all that counts."
It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen."
Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful."

RIP Coach Wooden = Greatness
UCLA/Wooden would have enjoyed playing in a tougher conference like ACC:
Imagine UCLA playing home/away every year teams like:
UNC, NC State, Duke, Maryland, South Carolina twice a year = Ten very tough games every year = No 88 Game Win Streak if in ACC.
Back then, only ACC tourney winner got to go to NCAA tourney = crapshoot
NO WAY UCLA gets by UNC, NC State, Duke, or Maryland to even play in NCAA tourney EVERY YEAR...

Wooden was 10-1 in the Final Four vs the best of the best. What makes you think he'd do any worse then the teams not better then the Final Four teams he beat?!?
Posted on 6/5/10 at 10:06 am to mrbug708
Don't forget he was Player of the Year and a 3-time AA and he was elected to the college HOF as a player BEFORE he won his first championship as a coach.

In ACC, many more games against better teams, home/away games UNC, NC State, Duke, Maryland gives higher chance for:
1) UCLA NOT winning ACC championship EVERY year,
2) NOT winning 88 games in row, etc,... IMO...

We will likely never see 88 game Mens college B-ball win streak again.
Here is a breakdown of the teams UCLA beat during the streak:
6 times - California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, USC, Washington, Washington State
4 times - Notre Dame
2 times - Cal. St. Barbara, Chicago Loyola, Iowa, Long Beach St., San Francisco
1 time - Arizona St., Arkansas, Bradley, BYU, Citadel, Denver, Drake, Florida State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa St., Kansas, Louisville, Maryland, Memphis, Michigan, NC State, Ohio, Ohio St., Pacific, Pittsburgh, Providence, Santa Clara, SMU, St. Bonaventure, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Villanova, Weber St., Wisconsin, Wyoming
(Only two of the 88 games were against ACC teams......just saying)
