But he admitted the whole thing is a judgement call.

The guy in charge of the rule doesn’t know the rule?

I agree he did a terrible job explaining it, though

Shouldn't have commented on the rule or interpretation "until seeing the video and reviewing the ruling the crew got on the headset."

Dumb to say it was the right call.

Yep. He made it worse. Holbrook should never call a game again.

ARod and Big Poppi didn’t agree

The whole world doesn’t agree.

That was one of the worse calls in baseball I’ve ever seen.

That's not an official twitter handle.

What does that prove? There's more to the rule than that.

Of course Torre said him being called out had nothing to do with how he ran the base path it’s that he interfered with catching the ball. That really makes MLB look bad.

There are two exceptions (wrinkles, really) in Rule 5.09(a)(11). First, the runner is permitted to leave the running lane to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball. Second, noticing that first base itself (the bag) is outside the running lane, the runner is permitted by rule to step out of the running lane for the purpose of touching first base.

Once the runner steps to the left of the first base line it is a complete judgment call by the ump if he thought it interferes with the throw. I didn’t think it did but that’s why it is a judgment call and could not be overturned by replay.

How is that relevant to this? If anything, the opposite was happening, such that he was veering off the grass at the last second.

What rule are you quoting? The interference rule that Torre confirmed was the call? No one in their right mind can possibly say Turner intentionally interferes with the fielder on that play.

It wasn’t a batted ball

Torre specifically said they called interference. Which, on a throw, requires intent

So, the umpire said Turner intentionally ran into Gurriel in order to impede him making a play

And Joe torre doubled down and agreed that he thought Turner intentionally interfered
