He definitely got dinged in the Penn State game and I think it's part of the reason he was put under wraps that day. I thought he was fine by the playoffs, though.

A meniscus tear is usually not that bad of an injury. Out all season seems excessive?

They’re probably just thinking long term and shutting him down for the year although he’d probably be good to go in a few weeks. If he was anything but a QB he’d probably play at some point this year.

That's what I recall, but wonder if it completely repaired or there was still some crap going on with that

Recovery from a badly torn meniscus that requires repair and surgery takes a lot longer to recover from than a minor tear that just needs scraped/trimmed.

I speak from experience - one took five months, the other took five weeks.

Apparently you can either cut the tear out and remove which is a short recovery, or try to repair and allow to heal which is the long recovery. Second option takes much longer.

How long does a meniscus operation sideline a football player these days?

If they repair it, it’s usually at least 4 weeks non weight bearing. Sometimes longer. Repairs provide athletes with better long term joint integrity vs just clipping it out though. A scope to clip out and clean it up would likely only have a player down for 10 days to 2 weeks max I’d imagine.
