Jason Whitlock article on LeBrons “more than an athlete”

quote:
The LeBron James “more than an athlete” obsession diminishes the importance of athletics.
You don’t need to be more than an athlete to change the world, to promote equality. Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali proved that years ago.
The modern athlete mimicking James’ obsession doesn’t grasp the power of athletics in American culture.
Competition is the fundamental belief at the core of the American experiment.
quote:
If America’s black athletes truly understood the power of sports, their fixation on proving they’re more than an athlete would dissipate. Do you see doctors wearing “More Than A Doctor” T-shirts? How about lawyers, movie directors, real-estate tycoons, bankers or insurance salesmen?
More Than An Athlete is a statement of insecurity. You’d think LeBron was a stripper. A dayshift stripper.
The truth is LeBron is a lot like the reality TV star who launched himself into the White House to prove he’s more than a billionaire. Mixing good intentions with ignorance, ego, greed and the privilege that goes along with being born into enormous wealth and/or athleticism can be quite dangerous.
In America, wealth privilege and athletic privilege blind and impair intellectual evolution. Gifts bestowed through inheritance and genetics are often misinterpreted by the receiver. Rather than fostering gratitude, they cultivate entitlement and delusion.
LeBron James wants to be a TV talk-show host, documentarian, movie producer, media mogul, grammatically challenged educator and political activist.

Does anybody actually like Jason Whitlock? I can't think of a single person I've ever seen go to bat for him.

The cognitive dissonance is overwhelming.

He tells it like it is, which makes him unpopular with the Twitter mob.

Then you’ve never read a thread on the MSB that involves him.

Yea I guess criticizing Lebron makes him attractive to a certain segment of people. Many of which congregate here

No, it’s more the perception of a black guy “telling it like it is”, as a poster already mentioned.

Yeah, but if athletes and movie stars didn't tell us how to live our lives then how would we know?

That article is a mess. He criticizes LeBron for wanting to be more than an athlete in terms of being vocal about social issues. Then he says:
It's the complete opposite of what he just said. The first half of the article is about how LeBron should play sports, not try to be an activist.
The second half of the article is about how LeBron should be an activist for the issue Whitlock thinks is important. The article makes no sense and just contradicts itself and comes off as Whitlock thinking LeBron shouldn't be an advocate unless he advocates for the things Whitlock thinks are important.

His well-meaning intention to improve the United States would be best served by being a vocal proponent of competition.

Lol i saw some college fb player with a faux sob tweet of himself celebrating in the endzone wondering "Is this the only time they think of me? " Answer: Yes, I also don't care about my doctor's personal struggles (not to place those two professions on the same tier)

I’m totally shocked people are speaking about the “character” or whether they like Jason Whitlock rather than actually acknowledging and debating what he has to say. Pretty typical fro America these days, right or left.

he threw in a lot of buzzwords to get people to click the article. best thing Whitlock good for
